Since a young age, I have been infatuated with the idea of magic being present in the real world. In order for me to get my fill of the fantasy I so craved, I utilized my resources, primarily literature. Having read every Secrets of Droon and Aragon book in the library over again, I took advantage of the available time and lack of sufficient reading material to engross myself in the most elaborate, magical world I had ever experienced. The story of an unfortunate boy plucked from his menial life in England to live the fantasy children dreamt of.
The Harry Potter franchise has seized the attention, as well as the hearts of an entire generation, including myself. It's because of this love that the moment I received a copy of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” a screenplay continuation of a childhood favorite, I was ecstatic! I, once again, had the chance to be engulfed in the story of a lifetime and experience the characters I loved so much. But after I finished reading, I was appalled. While I still loved the story and atmosphere it provided, the characters weren't anything like I remembered, namely Hermione Granger, a spunky girl with a quick wit. To me, she was a role model. She was intelligent, kind, and she was a hero. Yet her portrayal in the Cursed Child ranged kind and gentle to a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, bitter and angry. Similar, in many ways, to Severus Snape, Hermione Granger was a victim of lost love. While the comparison was effective, the way her character was written betrayed her original personality entirely. Hermione Granger would never have become a horrible, seemingly soulless person because she didn't marry Ron, someone she wasn't compatible with in the first place. She was strong and kind all on her own, a hero, not a supporting character with no discernible personality.
While borderline outraged by the inappropriate portrayal of Hermione, it was magical to see the next generation of wizards and witches on an adventure of their own. If you have a chance, I would recommend you read “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and make an opinion of your own
