Starting college is beginning to feel like forever ago. I can't believe I'm almost halfway through! Looking back on everything I've gone through so far I think it's safe to say I'm not the same person I was when I started college, and I have learned a lot.
I think that holds true for the majority of people as well. I wish that I would have been better prepared for some aspects of my college life, however, and think this holds true for not just myself. Here are four good things to start thinking about if you haven't already, and to pack when you make your big move.
1. Know how to dress for a job or interview
I cannot stress this enough.... being the person that walks into the room either too dressed up or not dressed up enough is no fun. Trust me. I have been there. More than once.
Having a pencil skirt, slacks, set of blouses and a blazer is worth the room it takes up in your closet. I can't tell you how many unexpected times I've had to get dressed up, and having these clothes on hand is something that will never hurt. Looking professional is not only necessary in the real world (surprise, it's coming faster than you think), but is never a bad move. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have!! Sometimes, you've gotta fake it till' you make it.
2. Build a resume
Ok. Resumés. Before college, I had no idea what this even entailed, let alone how to build one that looks good to an employer.
However, having a resume is so important, and worth starting now. Look, we are young. For most of us, what we have on our resumes is not going to be super outstanding.
If you didn't work a job, make sure you put meaningful volunteer experiences down that showcase who you are and what skills you have learned. Be creative. Once you land the first job, it only gets easier. Then, you can pick and choose what will look best for each employer, and suit each job you apply for.
3. Bring medicine
I cannot stress this enough. You are going to be living with tons of people who are from all different places, bringing different diseases. Let alone, you're going to be exhausted, up late, stressed out (I know, it sounds awful but it's not all bad) and your immune system will be down.
Odds are, you are going to get sick. Bring medicine. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially if you don't want to get out of bed and go to the emergency room to get an IV due to dehydration and the threat of mono (yup. So much fun).
4. Allow yourself to change
Last but not least, let yourself grow and change! College is all about figuring out who you are and who you want to be. You are not going to be the same as you were in high school, and that's okay.
Let yourself find new passions and learn more about who you are, and what you like and don't like. Change is good. Embrace it!
