"Dear Evan Hansen, today's going to be a good day and here's why."
"Dear Evan Hansen" is a musical about a teenager (Evan Hansen) with social anxiety. On the first day of his senior year, he encounters another student named Connor, who talks to him just long enough to sign his cast and push him to the ground. Days later, Evan learns that Connor has taken his own life and that he was found with a suicide note addressed to him. Unbeknownst to everyone else, the letter found with Connor was actually Evan's assignment from his therapist.
This triggers a snowball effect, which gets Evan entangled in an elaborate lie. Everyone now believes that Connor and Evan were best friends when, in reality, the only interaction they'd ever had was days before his death. He believes he's doing a good thing — helping Connor's family heal — and by starting "The Connor Project", he is able to help an even wider audience. As the lie progresses, Evan finds it harder to keep up with. People are starting to discover holes in his story, and eventually, he breaks, coming clean to Connor's family. In trying to help them and fix the mess he made, he ends up hurting everyone.
Ben Platt deserves every award in the world for his heartbreakingly real portrayal of this character. Coming from someone with an anxiety disorder, I relate to Evan in a lot of ways. Watching clips online, it's evident how passionate Ben Platt is. He is Evan Hansen, all the way down to the anxious ticks he's given him. He is honest, he is real, and he is dedicated to his character.
Everyone can relate to Evan in some way or another. This show is especially relevant at a time when we are talking more freely about topics like mental health and the stigma surrounding it. One of the most well-known songs from the show, "Waving Through a Window", expresses Evan's feeling of invisibility.
"You Will Be Found" is another one of the most popular songs from the musical.
Hands down, my favorite song from the show is "Words Fail." This is Evan's confession. It's his explanation. The lyrics are particularly heart-wrenching and powerful in this song. You can hear the pain in Ben Platt's voice as he sings the words "I never let them see the worst of me. 'Cause what if everyone saw? What if everyone knew? Would they like what they saw, or would they hate it too?" I understand how it feels to be afraid that people won't like you for your true self.
I could talk about this musical all day, but instead, I'm going to encourage you to listen to it yourself. The message is super important, and if you don't personally need to hear it, I'm sure that someone in your life does.
So thank you, Evan Hansen. Thank you for letting us know that we are not alone. Thank you for reminding us that no one deserves to disappear. Thank you for giving us the hope that we will be found.
