In case you missed it, 2017 was saved last Friday.
And no, Michelle Obama wasn't made the president of the universe (unfortunately). I'm talking about Ed Sheeran bringing out new music.
Don't know why this is a big deal, let me break it down for you.
A little over a year ago, Ed Sheeran took a break from social media. And not the "I'm getting more followers by leaving Instagram for a week", but the real kind of break.
For an entire year we heard nothing. The entire 2016 was spent without music or cute pictures of his rescue kitten. Frankly I think that's why 2016 was so godawful.
Then 1 year after the break we got this
Yes a blue square. But anyone that has seen Sheeran's album covers, we knew what was coming. Before everyone could process this, he released a video saying new music was coming on Friday.
For the rest of the week we got teased with bits of lyrics, album covers, and eventually a little bit of audio. Y'all, I was tweaking. And then it happened.
This is why I love Ed Sheeran, he's so chill and really loves his fans. I saw him in concert a few years back and he's so down to earth. He just walked on stage and was like "hey my name's Ed and I"m going to sing some songs. And once again he proved that he's the best. Not one but TWO singles and the world absolutely lost their minds.
Here's a breakdown if you haven't listened to the 2 songs
First of all, it can be assumed that this album is going to be "divide", following "plus" and "multiply". This is super exciting mostly because you know there's going to be "minus" which means another album at some point.
The first track is "Shape of You". I never though Ed Sheeran could have a song that could be played in a club but this is a jam. The backbone of the song is a Marimba based percussion beat, so it's very bouncy and different compared to what he's released before. It still feels like an Ed Sheeran song, with the typical falsetto and rhythmic melodies, but it's fresh and new.
Right? Total jam. I'm really hoping that he has this vibe in some of the other songs because it's so fun.
The second track is "Castle on the Hill". Oh my Lord. This is my favorite of the two because it's everything I love about Ed Sheeran in a song. The opening notes had me hooked, and by the time he crooned, "when I was six years old I broke my leg" I was hooked. It's the type of song that you scream out the open windows of your car when you're driving down a country road. It's nostalgia that is sweet and gritty at the same time.
Get ready y'all, because Ed Sheeran cooked up something pretty great during his hiatus. I have no idea when the new album is going to drop but the world isn't going to be ready when it does.
