The biggest trend in the beauty world right now is having clear skin. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't blessed with it. I thought that my acne days would end after high school graduation - not follow me to college.
Determined to reform my skin, I took some time to figure out what routine was both effective and easy to manage. What I've found works best is a simple routine with natural products - it's better for your skin and easier on your wallet.
Thus, I present to you a skincare routine that is not only suitable for almost any skin type but can also be used both morning and night.
1. Take it off
I'm pretty sure sleeping with makeup on is one of the seven deadly sins. Doing this is pretty much a guarantee for getting acne. I like to warm a small amount of coconut oil between my palms and spread it around my face. It's natural, hydrating, and easily melts off even the toughest makeup products. If that's not your thing, look for paraben-free makeup wipes (my favorite brand is Kirkland). It also helps to keep a pack of these by your bed for the nights you're too tired to go through the whole routine. Never skip this step!
2. Get suds
A common mistake people make is thinking a facial wipe is enough to remove all your makeup. (It's not). African black soap has been my holy grail product for keeping acne at bay. I prefer Shea Moisture's version - it's a less intimidating alternative to the raw stuff, which can be harmful to sensitive skin. If bar soaps aren't your jam, try a liquid soap with salicylic acid.
3. Watch your tone
Toner can improve acne, skin texture, dark marks, scars, hyper-pigmentation, and remove any final traces of makeup. And when it only takes about ten seconds to do, why skip it? Natural witch hazel on a cotton pad leaves your skin feeling clean and refreshed. I also love the Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray; it totally lives up to the hype! It hydrates and gives your skin a beautiful glow
4. Mark The Spot
If you have any active spots, target them with a natural spot treatment. This is what is going to actively attack inflammation. Dab some tea tree oil on any spots, go to bed, and wake up with clear skin.
5. Top It Off
Finish it all off with a moisturizer that works best for your skin type. Make sure to pick one with SPF for the daytime, and one without it for nighttime.
Day: L'Oreal Ideal Moisture Day Lotion (With SPF 25). It's light, non-greasy, and just the right amount of moisture to keep skin soft year-round.
Night: Ponds Nourishing Moisture Cream. This formula is a bit thicker, and great for when you need that extra bit of moisture to keep your skin from drying out.
