Makeup has been receiving a lot of hate on social media lately. Every time I casually scroll through my Instagram or Twitter feed, I see a post saying to "Take your girl swimming on the first date" or a video of a beautiful girl applying makeup with the caption criticizing how she looks too different with it on. These posts are usually made by stupid, teenage boys who know nothing about makeup and think that makeup users only wear it to impress them. Well guys, I have some news for you: we don't wear it for you.
Makeup is an art form. It's a fun and easy way to customize your look. I personally enjoy applying makeup because you can feel free to experiment with it since you can easily wash it off. It's also not as easy to perfect as it looks, so it's fun to see how your skills have progressed. Just like with regular art on a canvas, makeup doesn't need to be natural. It can be fun and crazy or more toned down and classic depending on how you feel that day.
We don't apply makeup to impress other people, we do it for ourselves. Everyone wants to feel like the most confident and beautiful version of themselves, so why is it such a crime if makeup is what helps them feel that way? If you think that someone's makeup looks bad just don't look at it. If that is what makes them happy and that is what makes them feel confident then leave them alone. Whether someone wants to wear a full face of makeup or no makeup every day, just let them do what makes them happy and back off. Obviously everyone is beautiful regardless of whether they want to wear makeup, but if someone prefers to wear it then let them do it.
Lastly, though I am personally more annoyed than offended by these posts, they are still a form of bullying and could hurt someone's feelings. I've seen too many videos of a person perfecting their art and applying makeup tainted with rude comments saying that they look ugly without it and are "lying" by applying makeup. As stated in the previous paragraph, makeup helps people feel more confident about themselves. Therefore, if somebody was feeling great about themselves and posted a video of their makeup look, mean people on the internet making it into a meme or leaving rude comments could really ruin their self esteem.
Next time you are typing out a tweet to make fun of someone's eyebrows or claim that people look better without makeup, take a step back and think twice. I speak for all makeup junkies when I say that we're not offended by your rude comments, we just think they're annoying. Hit us up if you're looking for a makeover, whether it's of your look or your attitude.
