Common Christian Stereotypes

I want to talk about some common stereotypes that Christians have that I do not fall into. Going into this, I want to be as honest as I can be. I’m not perfect nor do I claim to be. I will mess up time and time again, but I still strive to be a better person. There are some stereotypes that I want to talk about because I want to tell people that we’re not all the same.

1. Sexuality.

I know people that are homosexuals. We might not share the same views on this topic, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to hate or dislike you for it. I will accept you for who you are, and I'm not going to try and change you.

2. Science and religion

I might not agree with some points, but I don’t flat out ignore all science. I love science even though it’s not my strongest subject in school. I like learning about the human body, the earth, the solar system, and so on. Plus, medicine is great.

3. You can’t have fun.

I can be a Christian, and still have fun. I just might have different views on what we think is fun. For me, I’m not a partier. I’m more of a homebody, but I do love going out with my friends from time to time. I love catching a play or movie, laser tagging, bowling, going to a sports games, going to a concert, going out to eat, and so much more. That’s just who I am. I understand that we might not share the same interests, and that's cool.

4. I’m hateful and judgmental.

We’re all guilty of making snap judgement about people. Yes, there are some groups that people are extremely hateful and judgement, but I’m not a part of that. We might have different views on things, but I won’t hate you because of it. We’re all different which means we’re all going to have different opinions and perspectives on things. We all live differently, and I know we're not always going to see eye to eye. But that's okay. I would rather be positive and loving over being negative and hateful. Hate never solves anything. I try not to judge people because I don’t like it when people judge me. I don't know people are going through, and often times judgments can be wrong.

5. I’m going to shove my religion down your throat.

It's not the way to get someone to convert. At all. I respect your views whether you are religious or non-religious. No matter if you’re Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, or Buddhist. Of course, it would be cool if we shared the same belief, but I'm not going to hate you nor shove my religion down your throat if we don't. I will respect you if you don’t want to talk about it, but if you want to talk about it, then I am more than happy to.

6. Hi, I’m a Christian, and I think I’m better than you.

Eh. Wrong. Christian or not, I think everyone has pride in some way or another. There is always something that we think we do better than others. I’m not any different, and I don’t think I’m better than you because I’m a Christian. I don’t claim to be perfect. I’m far from it. I make mistakes just like the next person. I also suck at stuff too. I'm average at a lot of stuff.

At the end of the day, I am a person just like everyone else. I will have success, and make mistakes. I might believe in a certain way, but I also understand that there are people that don't believe the same thing I do, and that's okay. I respect that. All I ask, is to respect me too. I want to learn, and gain perspective on what others believe and think. I still have questions to things. I don't know everything.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
