It's More Than Just Conducting

Dear Music Teachers, Thank You

Dear Music Teachers,

First of all, thank you for devoting your time and dedicating your lives doing what you love: music. It can be hard to concentrate during those long rehearsals morning though night all year long. It is never easy to focus on one detail when you have several details to look at and master to perfection. Bless you and your multitasking skills.

Thank you for spending several hours planning your day and making sure the rehearsals go the way they're supposed to. You are the ones who pay attention to every last detail, from the crescendos to the sforzandos and even from those grueling flats in an A Flat major scale. When you rehearse music one piece at a time and if you see there is a certain section that is not right, you go over that particular section over and over until not only you're satisfied, but the part is perfect. It may be extremely irritating to us student musicians, but to you, it is nothing but another task on your to-do lists.

Thank you for coming in before and staying after rehearsals just so you can help us with our concerns over our particular parts. We know you have personal lives outside the music room, with families to look after and papers to grade, but we would not function or perform well without your help. As your students, we are forever grateful for helping us out.

Thank you for being such amazing role models for us music students. You are the ones who push us from good to great start to finish. We may have good and bad rehearsals, and there are times where you want to pull your hair out and scream until we get our music right. You teach us the discipline that shaped us who we are today. If it weren't for that strict discipline, we wouldn't be able to follow rules well and our lives would be chaos.

Thank you for making sure our instruments are functioning properly. From stuck valves to broken reeds, and lost key pads. If we have a broken instrument, then they are unplayable and we cannot perform. You are definitely the best in instrument mechanics and repairs.

Most importantly, thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for being such inspirations to us. You are the ones who spent your entire lives playing and making music happen. Your jobs are all about music and you teach us what music is all about, not just the notes, but the history and true meanings behind them.

From the hot band camp days to the stressful dress rehearsals, you always seem to keep your cool.

When we have problems, you listen to us and give advice when we need it. You are the ones who make us want to be professional music performers or even music teachers. Not all of us will pursue a music career, but music is what shapes us as humans, and it began with you teachers.

You are the ones who make music fun and that is why we play.

Thank You for being amazing music teachers!!

Love,

Your Beloved Music Students

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
