Deandre Baker has been all over the first two rounds of NFL analyst's mock drafts. He has been as high as the top-10 and as low as the mid-second round. Regardless of the team that drafted him, Baker can easily become one of the top defenders in the game, following in Marshon Lattimore's footsteps.
Baker was among the top cornerbacks in the nation last season after choosing to return to Georgia for his senior year. That ultimately proved to be a smart move since it dramatically improved his draft stock, landing him in a better situation as a pro.
Without elite athleticism, Baker is seen as a potential bust at the pro level but scouts made sure to make note of his advanced technical and fundamental abilities. Head coaches and general managers around the National Football League have come to expect that from head coach Kirby Smart's program.
New England Patriots head coach, the legendary Bill Belichick, has thrown high praise toward the Bulldogs since Smart took over. Belichick took two Bulldogs in last year's draft.
Baker won the Jim Thorpe award in 2018 due to his excellent play. The award is given out to the top defensive back in college football every year. Baker started all 13 games played and was the leader of the vaunted Georgia defense.
Despite losing many key veteran players at the end of last season, the Bulldog defense did not suffer as much as many people expected. The team was in the conversation for a second consecutive playoff appearance but fell just out of the rankings, appearing in the Sugar Bowl.
Baker had seven career interceptions at Georgia, highlighted by a 56-yard interception return against USC. His mentality was always to read the quarterback first, then the receiver, which let him anticipate the play with that excellent technicality and instinct.
Anticipation is key for defensive backs in the NFL, especially now with the rules being skewed towards offensive players. Baker is an excellent prospect and will challenge for a starting role right when training camp begins.
