How The Daith Piercing Changed My Migraines

How The Daith Piercing Changed My Migraines
American Migraine Foundation

For the past three years, I have dealt with migraines.

For those with migraines, you know that they can be this unwanted dictator of your life and at times, they can be difficult to cope with. They can make the best day of your life into the worst, they can ruin plans, and do so much more.

Everyone has their own unique story about how their migraines work, because not all migraines are the same. For me, I would get a migraine about twice a week and when they hit, they hit hard. The slight humming of the air conditioning, any form of light would make it ten times worst. When I wasn't having a migraine, I would have a constant running headache everyday.

There is no cure for migraines, but there are some things one can do to prevent them like avoiding triggers. My doctor told me to reduce stress, workload, and caffeine intake (as a college student that's the best joke anyone could ever tell me). They also added to try taking melatonin before bed, take B12 vitamins, and so on.

While doing those things helped to a certain extent, I still had my everyday headaches and migraines twice a week. Being in college, I did not have time to take a day to deal with a migraine because there is work that needs to get done and not getting it done just adds more stress (the irony).

One day, my roommate woke up and said, "guys, I'm going to get my cartilage pierced today". I sat up and explained to her that I had been interested in getting my daith pierced and how hard it was trying to manage my migraines and keep up with work. I then expressed that I didn't even know if it would be worth my money because there is no scientific evidence that the daith piercing is the end all be all for every migraine issue.

She explained how she knew two people who got them for migraines and how the piercing helped them tremendously. So, all I did that day was research on the daith piercing and all I could find was "it totally worked for me", "it did nothing", and very few comments who said "it made my migraines worst".

So I decided to jump the gun and go for it. If it did nothing, then the piercing looks cute anyways. If it makes it worst, I'll just take it out and let it heal. If it works - Hallelujah!

I went to a place that only specialized in piercing (not a tattoo/piercing place) and talked it over with one of the piercers for a second "professional" opinion. I knew that the piercer was a generally nice person who didn't say anything just to get my money because she said the same things to me that I was reading earlier that day. She explained that she knows a few people who said it helped tremendously, but there is no research for it, so she's not going to advocate and say "yes, this is the piercing you want!".

Still having the same thought process I had walking in, I told her "well if it doesn't work, it will look cute". So she took me to the back and bada bing bada boom! It was pierced.

Now for the question everyone is dying to know: did it hurt? Yes and no. When the needle went through it did not hurt at all, but also the piercer did it in a swift motion, so I think that played a role in it. After she took the needle out and then started to put the actual earring in, that was uncomfortable, but it wasn't unbearable. After the earring was in and I went out to finish my day, it only had a slight throbbing, stinging pain and hurt like pressing on a bruise if I laid on that ear (which you should not lay on the ear while it is healing). The worst part of it all was doing all the stuff to keep it clean - that was annoying.

The first month of having the piercing I didn't notice any changes in my headaches or migraines. I still got them and I came to the conclusion "well I have a pretty bad ass looking piercing, so that's a plus". But one day, I was on the phone with my poop face of a brother and he said that usually people don't notice anything until it really starts to heal and this piercing can take 4-6 months to heal. So, I held onto hope.

After month 3, I was going through my medications to see what I needed to refill and noticed "hey I have a lot of my migraine meds". I then realized that it had been a couple days that I have gone without a head ache throughout the day and that I didn't have one at that point in time.

This was a surreal experience for me since I have been so accustomed to living life with a headache every day and having to deal with a migraine a couple times a week. All of a sudden I did not have a headache.

A few weeks passed and yes, I did get headaches every now and then - like any normal person, but so far I haven't had any migraines. Despite there not being any scientific studies to prove that this piercing is the end all be all to all migraines, I would highly recommend anyone who does suffer from migraines to give it a try.

I would rather spend 75 dollars for a piercing + earring one time then paying a doctor hundreds of dollars for the visit and medication every time I go in to get my migraines reevaluated every 6 months and I am sure you feel the same way too.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
