If you have ever worked in retail, you know that it is not an easy job. Dealing with customers, your boss(es) and coworkers can make you want to quit. However, you put on a smile and act like everything is perfect because "the customer is always right," and you don't want to upset them. Doing this everyday makes us retail workers do things to deal with and get around the daily hassles of working in retail.
So here are few things that all retail workers have probably done but won't admit to:
1. "Let me check the back"
Oh, you want me to check the back to see if we have any extra of the product even though I know we don't have any of it in the back. Sure I'll go to the back and pretend to look for a few minutes and then come back and tell you we are all out.
2. Making faces and gestures at customers after they have been rude to you.
There they are - the one person you absolutely cannot stand. They just had to come in during your shift. You know they are rude and a pain to deal with, but you have to put on a smile and help them. However, when they turn their back, you make faces at them and cheer when they leave the store.
3. When someone comes into the store five minutes before close
Oh, you only need a few things and won't take long? Sure that is fine, but why are you grabbing a cart? Now you're perusing all the aisles and come to the checkout with a cart full of items, but you only needed a "few" things. You don't like staying late at your job. Why do you think I want to?
4. Customers letting their children run around
Sure -- let your child run around the store with no supervision. When a display or rack falls on them, don't come running to me when you should have been watching your child.
5. The fake laugh and smile you've mastered
Please, tell me more about your day. Have a joke that's not funny at all? I'll smile and laugh at it to humor you.
6. "Oh, it must be free today"
Customers seem to have so many jokes that they must think are original even though I've heard them a million times. Item doesn't scan -- "Oh, it must be free today."
7. Items that aren't in the right spot
Oh, you decided that you don't want this item? Maybe if you stick your can of peas in the bread instead of walking the extra 20 feet to put it back, no one will notice. Newsflash, we do notice, and it makes us upset.
8. The customer is always right
Contrary to popular belief, the customer is not always right. Being rude about it doesn't help either. You sure make a fool of yourself screaming at me that $1.66 each is not the right price for a 3/$5 deal.
