Communicating Through The Screen

It's the 21st century and I hate texting (yet I do it anyway).

Communicating Through The Screen

It's the 21st century and our most prevelant form of communication is texting. You text your parents where you are, you text your friends if they want to hang out and you can even text your boss saying that you are not coming into the office because you are "sick."

HOWEVER, with the luxury of being able to send a message in seconds to communicate with someone, there are people who abuse this new technology of texting.

There are people who do not text back.

Let me explain. There are people when that do not respond to me when I send a message. Now, I'm not claiming that EVERYONE has to respond to EVERY message that I send. I'll admit I'm not the best texter, but I do want people not to ignore my text message if I actually send an interesting message.

We live in a time where we HAVE to update what we are doing at every second on every single social media platform. If you plan on ignoring my message, (which is fine sometimes) DO NOT post on social media. I do not want to open up my Snapchat and see you sitting in your living room, watching Netflix. Free time and purposely choosing to ignore my text message is completely not acceptable.

But sometimes, we do have a busy schedule and are not able to text back, which I 100% understand. In this day and age, we are always required to have too much on our plate, meaning that we cannot always be by our phones. This is completely okay.

What is NOT okay is waiting to text me back for OVER A WEEK (yes, this has happened to me). I hate to be rude, but it is hard not to find time to be on your phone for five minutes and while looking at said phone for said five minutes, you can conveniently find my text message, waiting for you to respond to it. Thirty seconds out of your day is NOT hard to ask.

I know, I know. You probably think I'm completely petty for this article and you are completely right, but the fact that there are people in this world who think that they can easily ignore a text message, are wrong.

Not answering a text however is not as bad as being a bad texter. Sometimes there are people who do not want to text or just aren't good at holding a conversation over text message. Being a good texter is not an important skill for your resume; it's just a bonus if you have it.

One major fault of texting is not being able to understand tone of voice over conversation. You are having a conversation through a screen, not to each other's faces; therefore, being able to understand the message that the person is trying to convey can be tricky. Almost all of our communication relies on nonverbal cues, so a sarcastic text message can be portrayed simply as it reads, if the receiver of the message does not fully decode the message.

In summary, the fact that one of our main sources of communication is texting repulses me. Our society has slowly become addicted to having screens in front of our faces when talking to others. We should begin to appreciate the face to face conversations that we have almost everyday, instead of making others angry due to our lack of communication through texting.

Which is none other than beer; wonderful cold beer. With summer playing peek-a-boo around the corner while we finish up this semester, it's time to discuss the only important part of summer. And if you haven't already guessed, it's beer. There are few things I take more seriously than my beer, in order are: sports... and beer. Here are my favorite summer brews:

Bruce Springsteen's Top 7 Lyrics

Everything Bruce says in his classic rock songs.

bruce springsteen album cover born in the usa

Anyone who was born and raised in New Jersey (or anywhere really) knows of Bruce Springsteen, whether or not they like him is a whole other situation. I hope that his hundreds of classic rock songs and famous high energy performances, even in his sixties he can put on better concerts than people half his age, are at least recognizable to people of all ages. Love him or hate him (I identify with the former) you have to admit that some of his songs and interviews have inspirational quotes and lyrics.

New England Summers Are The BEST Summers

Why you should spend your next summer in New England.

Marconi Beach

Three years ago, I chose to attend college in Philadelphia, approximately 360 miles away from my small town in New Hampshire. I have learned many valuable lessons away from home, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Pennsylvania. One thing that my experience has taught me, however, is that it is absolutely impossible to beat a New England summer.

You cannot beat the beach. Believe it or not (which many people may not), New England has a long and beautiful coastline. Most of my high school summers were spent sitting on the Wall at Hampton Beach, getting sunburnt and eating Acai bowls from The Secret Spot. The Wall was the place to be both during the day and at night. We begin our days there with a KB's bagel and coffee, and end them with pizza and ice cream. It’s not a New England summer without that 4 p.m. text from someone, “Who wants to meet at the Wall tonight?” Nighttime is for Tripoli’s Pizza, the sound of waves, and wishes on shooting stars. Wednesday nights are especially important, as those are the nights that Hampton Beach sets off the weekly firework display.
