Last Friday, Chance the Rapper dropped his third mixtape, entitled Coloring Book, exclusively on Apple Music (and through a unofficial leak on DatPiff). The long-awaited tape has propelled Chance back into the game, and some are calling Coloring Book an early contender for rap album of the year, if it's allowed.
The album brings out a soulful-side of Chance, pairing it with the old style Chano that we all know and love. The 14 track mixtape has almost 20 features, including verses from Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Future, and even Justin Bieber.
Yes.
You read that right.
Even Justin Bieber's picking up what Chance's putting down.
Chance is known for his constant activism, especially when it comes to gun violence and racial justice. Coloring Book seems to be a type of thank you to everyone and everything that's got him this far.
My Top Pick: Blessings
One of the few songs with no official features, but including a hook sang by Jamila Woods, one of Chance's more popular features. The lyrics in this track really hit home, bringing together Chance's style and connection to today's youth. It also includes my favorite line off the entire album:
"I don't make songs for free/ I make 'em for freedom/ don't believe in the king, believe in the kingdom"
Misses the Mark: All Night feat. Knox Fortune
I really wanted to like this song, but I feel like it's the odd man out on the tape. It just doesn't really fit the vibe the rest of the tape seems to follow, but then again, everyone needs a break sometimes.
Hidden Gem: Same Drugs
The first time I heard this track, I had no idea what the hell happened. I was confused and concerned, but by the second verse I started to get into it, and by the third hook I was sold.
All in all, Coloring Book does it for me. The tape has a well-rounded sound, and it's totally understandable why people see it as an early contender for rap album of the year.
But for now, we'll just have to wait.
