College, for many people, can be the best years of their lives. It can be a place to escape from the real world and start fresh. However, for some people it may not be the best experience.
I applied for college about a year in advance. It's probably the easiest college to get into, but I really wanted to make sure everything was planned and not just last minute. I applied here without even researching on the school and their reputation (big mistake) as I was just too focused on going back to school after taking two years off.
My college expectations were very high. I applied thinking I'd have the best time of my life studying what I loved. See, I never thought college was going to be exactly like high school. I thought we were all young adults pursuing our dreams with education we were all interested in. But here we are, with one month left of college and the school year has been nothing but a headache. It all started the very first week of college. The drama had slowly started and somehow just never ended. It really sucks having to sit through 8 hours of school four times a week with this massive tension between people. It's extremely exhausting.
Now that we're near the end of the school year, I can certainly say that I have learnt a lot. Here are 10 things I've learnt in the past 9 months...
1: Some people just genuinely find joy in making others feel bad about themselves
2: You can't control anyones actions but your own
3: You need to stand up for yourself and take control
4: You can't trust everyone
5: A person you think is real could really just be the total opposite
6: You need to stand up for whats right and wrong
7: You should ALWAYS speak your mind and never let people walk all over you
8: People like to talk ABOUT you instead of TO you
9: Don't let yourself become overwhelmed with your school work
10: Don't give a single fuck about what people think.
Overall, this year was....decent. If you take out all the negative/toxic people, my experience would've most likely been much better. On a happier note, what I really enjoyed about this year was going on so many site visits around the city. I also enjoyed our in-class wine/whiskey tastings. They really incorporate the real-world into the class which was quite fun at times.
If I would recommend anything at all to students going into college, I'd suggest doing some research. Check the school reviews, the program reviews, speak to people who have been and ask questions!! This is something I certainly wish I had've done.
