Christmas is almost here, and that also means the best holiday ever is just around the corner. Christmas and all that it brings inevitably puts a smile on everyone's faces and joy in everyone's hearts. During the Christmas season, there seems to be a new attitude that captivates people. One that is overflowing with kindness and joy. The best part is that this new attitude is very contagious, so before you know it, you have a whole world radiating with this kindness and joy. As you are driving home from last minute Christmas shopping with those you love the most in this world beside you singing at the top of your lungs to Jingle Bells and lights sparkling all down the street; it seems that, even for a moment, the world around you is at peace.
Sometimes I think to myself, "If only everyday could be like Christmas". Now, I am not necessarily meaning everyday you open presents and eat a lot of yummy food and say Merry Christmas to everyone you see, because of course making Christmas into the ordinary would take the magic from it. What I mean when I say, "If only everyday could be like Christmas" is that what if everyday of the year, people treated one another with kindness and gentleness?
What if people put someone else's desires and wants above their own?
What if everyday we desired for others to succeed and did everything in our will to help them get there?
What if it was normal to give to others and not just take from others?
What if we were selfless and giving of ourselves on March 18th like we are on December 25th?
What if we shared a smile with a stranger like we do during the holiday instead of cutting him off in traffic on any normal day?
Don't you find it strange that the kindness, selflessness, and joy that has defined Christmas is not the definition of a "normal" day? To me, it feels like something is backwards here. We have one day out of 365 days where it is normal to be kind.
What if the normal was kindness and sacrifice?
I don't know about you, but I wish that every moment of mine could be like the moment of peace in the car with those I love. I wish that everyday could be like Christmas in the way the we treat one another. I wish that the normal would change from ignorance to acknowledgment; from hate to love; from selfishness to sacrifice; from taking to giving.
