If You Aren't Playing Tourist In Your Own City, You're Doing Something Wrong

A common complaint of a lot of college kids and people who have newly graduated is that they want to see so much of the world but lack the time and money to do so. While that is a very valid complaint, and I myself have probably ranted about some version of that statement, it's important to remember why it is you would like to travel - for the experiences, food/drinks, culture, and diversity, right?

Now, while it's important to keep saving to make your travel ambitions occur, people often forget how cheap, fun, and easy it can be to be a tourist within your own city.

People often don't recognize this as an option, mostly due to the fact that we are so used to our daily routine. So much so, that we become less curious and don’t pay attention to the little details - or huge landmarks - that are right in front of our eyes.

One of the biggest reasons I decided to move to Chicago was because of the fact that it was a metropolis, and so, while I spent my time here I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on some of my favorite hobbies such as going out to eat, going to concerts and plays, and other related experiences.

Admittedly though, there are still a few touristy things I have yet to do, which are so easy to put off because 'they'll always be there...' However, I recommend setting one day a month, where you and your friends or family go out of the way to go do that touristy thing you've been putting it off.

There's a reason why you wanted to do whatever it was in the first place, but doing so will most likely be worth it - whatever it is - because it's one of the things that attracts actual tourists to your town.

Its popularity aside, doing things like this can help offer new information or perspectives on your hometown, where you grew up, or where you live now (if those places are different for you). Even if they're not different, going out of your way to experience these touristy things can help bring back childhood memories.

At the very least, it'll give you a sense of pride. You're very much a part of your city, and exploring it can get you more intact with its history, diversity, and personality. Your city is much more than your place of residence - it provides a sense of place and belonging. Going about and exploring around may amplify the sense of feeling a part of your city. If anything, it can offer a sense of humility - you just need to remind yourself that you can find beautiful things right where you are.

Not only this, but it provides a nice break from your normal routine.

Most people have their favorite restaurants, bars, coffee shops or other hang out spots, and while it's unlikely that you'll adopt a touristy place to be your new favorite, it's still a nice break from your regulars, and can be a worthwhile experience or a breath of fresh air.

Living and exploring where you do cuts down on your travel time - which in turn, saves quite a bit of money, not to mention the hassle. Additionally, less traveling give you more time to explore!

While it's important to learn about different cultures, and travel abroad if inclined, there's nothing wrong with taking time out to admire and learn more about where you currently are.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
