Nine-year-old me became fascinated with the world of magic and the supernatural during a night rerun of Charmed. I immediately fell in love with the three independent women fighting life and death battles while overcoming the minute struggles of the real world as well.
It was the first time I saw something uncommon, women being represented as capable, strong, band beautiful all at once.
To this day, I continuously binge-watched the eight seasons of Charmed to get inspiration and nostalgia over the storyline. So, when I heard news of a Charmed reboot, my heart jumped with excitement.
They finally answered the fans prayers! After many and many years of asking and hoping, they brought it just for us. However, when I watched the trailer that aired in May, my heart sunk with a lot of disappointment.
I really only have one question, how are you going to have a Charmed reboot without the original cast or storyline? At first, when I watched the trailer, I didn't recognize the show at all.
Everything has changed. I don't mind the modernization of the show however, it has been crafted very blandly with the plot line. The effort into the show portrays the simple setting of the show; the house.
Originally the Charmed One's house was in San Francisco yet, the house in the reboot is not. Instead, it is a replica from the canceled show Witches of East End.
As a Charmed fan, I feel like they did not listen to the wants and needs of the fans of the show. I wasn't expecting the whole original cast to make a presence on the show, but I was hoping for them to follow-up on Phoebe and Piper's children.
In the last episode of the show, Phoebe had three young daughters. Three daughters, who have the potential of being Charmed ones. I would have preferred that plotline, instead of completely rebranding the show and re-illustrating it to "overshadow" the original.
The producer's effort to re-illustrate the show honestly doesn't hold a candle to the original. The worse part of it all about the reboot of Charmed is that it was not written in the light of the original show.
Their mother mysteriously died, and they meet their long-lost sister then discover their witches from their Whitelighter who makes a dramatic entrance. It appears like a sitcom and looks like a bad soap opera. They only become special and considered capable because they are witches.
That is not the message the original show provided for the viewers. Their magical powers had nothing to do with what made them special or strong. Instead, it was more about their character, their sisterhood, and their passion to make the world a better place.
