I used to work at a hotel as a concierge, so I know all things Charleston. There were some guests who only came to Charleston for food; it was seriously my favorite to ask a couple what they are in town for and they giggle and say, “Food.” Nothing else. Because Charleston is such a food-oriented town, I decided that it was necessary to have a list of hidden gems that are new to not only tourists but college kids. Going to the College of Charleston, you already know about the chains like Chipotle, Five Guys or Jimmy John's, and some local places like Jacks, Persimmon or Kudu, but this list will entice your taste buds and convince you to go out of your comfort zone further than your 2-block radius.
1. P.I.E. Bake Shoppe
Though the restaurant is small, the tastes are mighty. They have a small bakery section where you can get -- you guessed it -- pies (and other goodies). The desserts are great, but the sandwiches are to die for. The Strawberry Fields sandwich is magical. They serve breakfast and lunch until 3:45 p.m., and the staff is really friendly, so it’s a great way to start your day. Find the menu here.
2. Goat Sheep Cow
Do you like cheese? Charleston’s premiere fromagerie is the place for you. Two women decided they loved cheese so much they opened up shop to let the rest of Charleston love it too. You can taste test all different types of goat cheese, sheep cheese, or cow cheese, and you can even pair it with a selection of wine. Stop by to try cheeses or order a platter for a special occasion. Shop online here.
3. Pan e Vino
The setting for this restaurant is charming; there is a small patio with twinkle lights and candles with light classical or jazz music playing in the background. Come here for authentic Italian food with a nice wine selection. The portions are decent sized and it is reasonably priced for being such a nice restaurant. This is a great dinner date location for college kids -- I mean, they have twinkle lights, guys. Find the menu here.
4. City Lights Coffee
This coffee shop has a very cozy environment with all dark wood walls and floors. It is a nice place to warm up when it’s cold outside. They have great coffee, baked goods, and simple sandwiches. The staff is really friendly, which helps create that comfortable atmosphere. Try their coconut cake and a French roast coffee and you won’t be disappointed! Find the menu here.
5. Cru Café
If your parents are in town and you want to impress them with a nice lunch, go here. They have a great chicken sandwich and their sweet tea is almost as good as my Momma’s. The restaurant is in a classic Charlestonian house, and you can eat on the front porch. It is very cute and very delicious, with decent prices for a college kid. Find the menu here
6. Artisan Meat Share
If you want sandwiches that will make you cry a little, you have come to the right place. It is so small that you can barely sit down inside, but take it back to your dorm because you will be in a food coma afterwards. The sandwiches are packed full of meats, cheeses, and flavors, and they support local businesses, which is always a plus. Find the menu here.
7. Brown Dog Deli
This place is so good there is almost always a line. Good thing they deliver for free anywhere on the peninsula. Not only are their hot dogs amazing, but their sandwiches are also equally as good. They have a vegan menu and are really considerate when it comes to food allergies. Find the menu here.
8. Fast and French
If you want a quick and delicious croissant, come here. This menu is cheap as hell, which is great. Breakfast should always be cheap. But the French breakfast foods are authentic -- very buttery and flaky. Avoid lunch hour though, because the line is so long it’s out the door! Find the menu here.
9. Christophe Artisan Chocolatier
Instead of going to CVS or Walgreens to get chocolate, come to Cristophe’s. They have gourmet, freshly made chocolate and French pastries. Try some authentic macaroons and pressed coffee. Find the menu here.
10. Taco Spot
This place is so small that there is no seating on the inside. It is just a kitchen. There are some picnic tables in the back, but that is it. They have the best damn tacos I have ever had. I do not even like fish tacos, but I swear this place makes me love them. It is cheap, delicious, and pretty fast. They deliver too, if it is out of your way. Find the menu here.
11. Market Street Deli
Have you ever walked down South Market Street and noticed that dude always talking to himself about the best sandwiches in town? Well, that guy actually works at Market Street Deli as the informal spokesman for it. It is relatively average food and they have terrible air conditioning, but I love it. Really, it is nothing special, but if you want a classic club pretty fast, it is a great option. I think the only people that go there are me and lost tourists. Find the menu here.
