Okay, so you’ve read the title and you’re probably thinking “You mean WHAM!/George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” right? I know it’s a great song.” Well, I don’t care that you know it’s a great song, I’m here to tell you how it’s the best song of all f***ing time. Don’t think so? Well, allow me to enlighten you handsome stranger.
It Sets A Mood:
The late George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” is an instant classic, from the instrumentals to its rich and enticing lyrics to its melodic tune. As the rich and satisfying saxophone introduction and instrumentals are played by Steve Gregory, whom I believe does a phenomenal job. He creates a romantic tune that is not only iconic but a memorable tune. The pieces are made romantically and cause not only myself but anyone listening to it, to want and have a need to sway and groove to. As it sets a stage for George’s soft tone.
It’s Not Just Any Ol’ Love Song:
For those who have heard the song before, you’d know it as a genuine love song. But that’s not the case, for those who’ve read the lyrics, you’ll know it’s much more than that. This is actually a cheating song, as Michael sings about cheating on his partner and ultimately regretting it. It’s also about how the truth can kill the relationship when telling your partner that you’ve cheated on them but want to redeem yourself and fix the relationship.
“Should've known better than to cheat a friend,
And waste the chance that I've been given-
So I'm never gonna dance again,
The way I danced with you~”
The Chorus Is Catchy As Hell:
Anyone who’s listened to the song before can already tell you, it’s a catchy freakin’ song. Its lyrics are amazing and its chorus is rich and quick to stick inside your head. I catch myself humming it all the time!
“I'm never gonna dance again,
Guilty feet have got no rhythm-
Though it's easy to pretend,
I know you're not a fool~”
This song is so great I even bought a ringtone of the chorus on iTunes and best believe that’s my ringtone whenever you call me!
George Michael Puts Passion Into Singing The Song Even Though He’s Admitted to Hating the Song:
Pulling in listeners into this song is the passion and charisma that George Michael puts into this song. However, in his 1991 autobiography BARE and in a 2009 interview with The Big Issue, Michael stated that he actually hated the song. Yeah, it’s a bit of a shock as well. Reason being is that he thought the song had “flipity” lyrics, and that he was just a 17 year old taking a bus drive, who happened to just randomly write the lyrics. Nonetheless, despite his hatred for the song, Michael does a great job in bringing in that bit of an angsty charisma into the way he sings the song. From that passionate but almost forceful way he sings the line “Got no rhythm” to even the final verse of the song. I know it’s an artist’s job to convey to the audience how passionate and talented you are but hell… George Michael has one hell of a way to show it in this song, even the way he sings that final verse of the song showcases a passion and romance that it almost creates a “wait for it, here comes the best part” kind of appeal.“Tonight the music seems so loud!
I wish that we could lose this crowd-
Maybe it's better this way,
We'd hurt each other with the things we'd want to say
We could have been so good together,
We could have lived this dance forever-
But no one's gonna dance with me...
Please stay~”
Okay, okay, I know this is cheesy as hell but come on! You can’t tell me that George Michael singing this great work of art isn’t romantic as hell! That sweet saxophone opening, with that passionate and catchy freakin’ chorus. You bet your ass if I hear that song at any moment in time, I will become that Latino Papi Smooth man every woman watching novellas (Spanish soap operas) want. It’s a romantic tune, how can you not get into the loving mood.
