I never thought I would be stressed about BUGS!
This semester I'm taking an Entomology class, and wow--there is so much to learn about insects. They are incredible and creepy at the same time. Studying them makes me want to know it all and never go outside again.
Here are some fun/weird/interesting tidbits about bugs to simultaneously frighten and dazzle you.
1. Maggot Balls
What is a maggot ball you ask? Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. It's a giant mass of maggots that move through the body during decomposition, breaking up tissue and dispersing matter.Example of maggots decomposing material during the Active Decay Stage (when the skin is sloughing off the body)
2. Say "I Love You" With Valentine Ants
What better way to profess your undying love to someone than with a valentine ant! They can't sting you and they have a heart-shaped abdomen.
Nothing says love more than a creepy bug!
3. My Place is Cooler Than Your Place
Army ants live in a special house called a bivouac. A bivouac is a giant ball of ants. They live in a house made out of themselves.
4. "I've Got Hungry Eyes"
The eyes of a predator. Large, forward-facing, and widely spaced to increase stereoscopic vision.
It's peering into your soul.
5. Darwin Beetles
Possibly my favorite insect, the Darwin Beetle is good at one thing:
Throwing other bugs.
