The Oscar nominations were released this past week, and as the Oscar season comes upon us, we can look back on what history refers to as the greatest upsets in Oscar history.
1. Citizen Kane
When Citizen Kane lost best picture, the audience erupted in outrage. Boos were heard every time the movie was mentioned for the rest of the night.
2. Coppola
When Francis Coppola, director of The Godfather, lost "best director" at the 1973 Oscars, people were stunned. The Godfather was an incredibly influential movie and grossed over $100 million in the US, so it came as a shock to many.
3. Braveheart
Braveheart took the award for "Best Picture" in 1996 over Apollo 13, the fan favorite, and it went on to win another four Oscars.
4. Saving Private Ryan
Another best picture upset was when Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare in Love.
5. Crash
Crash has been considered the worst best picture of all time. Yikes.
