Let’s cut to this past Wednesday morning. I was having a breakdown in the Lind Hall Starbucks over a physics paper I should have finished a long time ago. During one of my many study breaks, I happened to scroll upon "The Avengers: Infinity War" trailer and couldn’t help but let out a peal of laughter. If you, like me, have been following the Marvel movie franchise since middle school, trailer releases for Marvel movies fill you with so much excitement and anticipation that you can’t even imagine how you’ll ever make it to the premiere date of the movie. And, because we have so much time between the release of the trailer and the release of the actual movie, we might as well overanalyze every detail of the minute-and-a-half-long teaser and jump to wild conclusions.
The movie trailer opens with a voice-over commentary from none other than our favorite man, Tony Stark. During the first and last few clips of the trailer, we see a range of characters who appeared in "The Avengers" movies and other films such as "Doctor Strange" and "The Guardians." As the trailer progresses, we are introduced to our antagonist, Thanos, who is out to be in possession of all of the Infinity Stones. The Infinity Stones, six in total, are vital to the Marvel Universe because each one yields extraordinary power. To possess them all would allow anyone to bend the universe to their will or destroy it all-together, bringing it back to a pre-Big-Bang period in time.
So for Thanos, a telepathic and telekinetic superhuman, to be in possession of all six Infinity Stones would mean trouble for everyone in the Marvel Universe. Further along in the trailer, we see peril prevail in multiple places across the globe, a glimpse of Peter Parker’s spidey senses, Cap with a beard, T’Challa along with the people of Wakanda running into battle, Spiderman getting his ass kicked by Thanos and, most importantly, Thanos taking the Infinity Stone implanted in Vision. While we don’t know all the intricate details of the plot, we know it’s definitely going to be jam-packed with action, surprise and, of course, classic Marvel comedy.
The biggest concerns surrounding the "Infinity War" movie are screen time, plot and death. First off, this movie is bringing in a lot of characters from the Avengers series and multiple other Marvel movies. Will all of these characters be sufficiently represented seeing as the storyline is already quite expansive? The concept of the Infinity Stones is intricate and something that needs a lot of time to be thoroughly developed. Wielding these stones is nothing like battling your everyday villain or closing a space wormhole.
It’s been confirmed that there will be a fourth "Avengers" movie, but I'm concerned about the continuation of the plot. Will it take place immediately after "Infinity War"? Will "Infinity War" end in a pre- or post-war setting? All we can hope is that the plot of the movie isn’t rushed like that of so many other superhero movies and that it actually makes sense.
Our final concern, of course, is death. Since so many Marvel characters are going to appear in this movie, death is inevitable. Now while we don’t know how well the Marvel Cinematic Universe will follow the Marvel Comics, we might be saying farewell to a superhero favorite (if you’ve read the comics, you know). Thankfully, Tom Holland still has a Spiderman sequel to film later next year, so I won’t be saying goodbye to my favorite actor anytime soon.
I don't think I'd make it to May 4, 2018, if Black Panther weren't being released in just a few months. I need my Marvel fix and a trailer is simply not enough. With such a coveted plot being introduced in the Marvel Comics Universe, this movie will without a doubt hit huge marks at the box office and see success across the globe. Though we don’t know what exactly our Marvel superheroes will face in the coming months, I for one am ecstatic to the opening day of this movie.
