Australian Translation

Maybe it's the accent or maybe it's just the word choice.

After spending a month with Australians in a study abroad program, I have a better of idea what they’re saying. It’s not all Hemsworth Brothers and Crocodile Dundy, but at the same time, it’s hard to understand when they speak quickly.

Keen: to like something/ know

Hooroo: good bye

Ridgey Didge: real deal

Bogen: country hick/ redneck

Fangen: act of being hungry

Bugger: animal

Sprung: caught

**In some parts of the US, “sprung” is to free. “I was sprung from jail.”

Pash: French kissing

Galah: rude and loud

Clucky: wanting babies

Many Australian words and slang are just shortened of the original word.

Maccas: McDonalds

Brolly: Umbrella

Cuppa: cup of tea

Ledg: legend

Avo: avocado

Roos: Kangaroos

And because Australians use a lot of swear words, I have a few of them for you.

Fuckall: to do nothing

Shithouse: really bad

Shitcunt: playful version of dickhead, bloody idiot or pesky

Tit up/ ass over tit: fall over

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
