As we come to the sixth week of the semester abroad, homesickness has started to creep in for many of my international friends. I thought I'd ask them what three things they missed most about their home country to see how they compare.

While some of their answers come to no surprise, others are quite interesting.

Mexico - Edson Art'mo

1. The food

2. Warm people

3. Beaches

Canada - Nic Ko

1. People saying sorry

2. Beautiful landscapes and all the lakes and rives

3. All the multiculturalism you can ask for

Germany - Lukas Doll

1. How close most of the cities are to nature (Mountains/forests for skiing, biking, and other sports)

2. Sitting outside in a Beergarden during our summers

3. The variety of delicious breads

India - Saahir Kapasi

1. The culture

2. Cheap and amazing food

3. Warm beaches

Egypt - Dina Saleh

1. The welcoming people

2. The weather

3. The beach

Netherlands - Marcelle Bartels

1. Legal Weed

2. Drinking cheap coffee in the sun

3. The canals

France - Paul Metin-Quesada

1. Good bakeries

2. Great literature!

3. Cafes where you can spend all afternoon just sitting outside smoking and drinking coffee with people haha

New Zealand - Ellie Mcmanaway

1. Mince and cheese pies

2. Cows and sheep crossing the road

3. Wearing jandals in the middle of winter

United States - Moi

1. Numerous superstores

2. JIF peanut butter

3. Miles, lbs, and Fahrenheit

Italy - Alessandra Chiorboli

1. The food (AND WINE)

2. The incredible variety of beautiful landscapes you can find traveling around (from the alps to the beaches in the south)

3. The looooooong history we have and the fact that there's evidence of it everywhere

Austrailia - Scarlette Gawkowski

1. Being surrounded by amazing beaches

2. People are super friendly and relaxed

3. Nice weather all year round

Sweden - Sara Andersson

1. How Sweden is pretty progressive and inclusive

2. Our "fika" culture

3. "Allemansträtten" that anyone can access all our beautiful nature, lakes and coastal areas

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
