An Open Letter To My Boyfriend On Our First Anniversary
Alison Makinen

To the boy who has become my best friend, my other half, my partner-in-crime, my forever date, and my world: this one's for you.

First and foremost, happy one year, boyfriend! I can't believe how fast this past year has flown by; it seems like just yesterday I was texting you, "Can we just date already?", and you responded with a sarcastic, but sincere "yes, of course". Since that moment, baby, I've been 100% yours, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

You have made me the happiest girl in the world, simply by being you, and loving me so flawlessly. You are one of the sweetest, kindest, most loving, and most handsome men I've ever met. You're simply my definition of the perfect boyfriend. (Stay back ladies, he's mine!) You can always make me laugh, even when I'm "mad" at you. I love our love. It's the best kind of love. I'll cherish it forever.

I am so grateful that our paths crossed and that I fell for your perfect smile, your infectious laugh, and your gigantic heart. I thank the heavens above for "us" each and every day. God has blessed me so huge with you. I've prayed to find someone like you for as long as I can remember, and here you are.

I love so much about our relationship, but most of all, I love that we make each other better. Better athletes, better students, better friends, better people overall. You push me to do and be my best every single day, and that means the world to me. You're my number one fan, and I am yours.

I have you to thank for introducing me to some of the greatest people I've met. Thank you for sharing your family with me; I am so lucky to have such a beautiful, loving, caring second family, a family who treats me like I'm one of them. Thank you for sharing your friends with me; our friend group consists of some of the most amazing friendships I've ever had, friendships that I know will last a lifetime. (Let's just say, our wedding would be absolutely lit!)

We know each other like the back of our hands. You've accepted and embraced my frantic, busy-bee Type A personality, and calmed me with your Type B personality. We simply go together so well, like nutella and peanut butter. They do say, "opposites attract", after all. They're so right.

In you, I see my future. I see us living a beautiful life together, one we've talked about countless times. You make me hopeful. You make me joyful. I am confident that as I long I have you by my side, as long as your hand is in mine, I can take on just about anything. We're the perfect team.

You probably think this whole thing was very sappy and lame, but we both know that you love the soft stuff. I love you, baby! Today's all about us, so let's celebrate all there is to celebrate. Here's to many more anniversaries, my love! XOXO.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
