Why Seinfeld's Elaine Benes Is My Style Goddess

Pretty sure I was three years old when the show ended, but I love her.

Elaine Benes. A fictional character on a television show ("Seinfeld") that has been off the air for 18 years.

A show that ended when I was just three years old, and yet, is so near and dear to my heart. Using the term “girl crush” to describe my love for Elaine would be an accurate use of the term. She is a woman I greatly admire and would even consider to be a role model. She is independent, quick-witted, and outspoken in the best way. She can be charming, and she can be neurotic, but she is always one of the best characters to watch on Seinfeld. Who doesn’t love a curly-haired gal with padded shoulders who also happens to be hilarious?

This brings me to my main point. Let’s face it, all of the clothes that we wear today have drawn inspiration from an earlier time. All I am proposing is that we take a page out of the book of Elaine Benes and bring back some of her fashion choices.

Let’s take a look, shall we?

1. The Shoulder Pads

The iconic look. Sophisticated and freakin' boss.

2. Denim.

Denim on denim is inescapable. Let's embrace it like Elaine clearly does.

3. Throwback dresses.

A dress that resembles a grandmother's wallpaper and loafers with white ankle socks isn't normally what I grab out of the closet when I get up in the morning. Yet, here Elaine is, completely rocking it. And here I am, loving every second of it.

4. Casual.

This is an outfit that speaks to me on so many levels. A dad shirt and some dad jeans, topped off with dangling earrings and the world's largest, forest green scrunchie. I'm really into it.

5. A little bit of everything.

Those stockings. That pattern. And yet, she slays.

6. Anything goes.

Well, I can't be sure, but that looks like a man's wool jacket to me. Something that looks like it belongs in the woods of Alaska and Elaine puts it over a denim jacket and wears it to the diner. Legend.

7. Thrifty.

All of these look like items I would see in Goodwill and definitely pass. Well done, Elaine Benes.

8. One for good measure.

One more, because just look at her.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
