Since it is the summer, most high school and college students are finding themselves with more and more time on their hands with nothing to do. Since most of you are probably broke like I am, I thought I would make a list of some fun and FREE things to do in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. If you aren't in Michigan, you may have similar events around you too!
1. Go to Frog Island Park & Riverside Park!
The two parks are attached to one another by a bridge, so if you go to one you can go to the other as well! These parks contain areas for fishing, walking trails, bike paths, a community park, and plenty of open space to play tag or throw a baseball. If you have never seen the big yellow lawn chair in person before, it is located in Riverside Park!
2. Attend First Fridays Ypsilanti!
On the first Friday of each month, downtown Ypsilanti hosts multiple fun outings, for families and friends to attend. Some of them are free, and others cost money. For the month of May, the events included free roller derby and cooking lessons from Vego-O-Ramo. To see the schedule for future months, you can click here.
3. Check out the cars at Depot Town Cruise Night!
Every Thursday from 5 pm to 8:30 pm throughout the month of June, Depot Town will be filled with antique cars. If you feel like checking out the lovely Depot Town and examining some retro cars, this will be the event for you. More information on this event can be found here.
4. Enjoy yourself at the Ypsi Fest!
Between the dates of August 24 and August 26, Ypsilanti will be hosting its Ypsi Fest. This year will feature live music, museum tours, craft vendors, balloon rides and so much more. If you would like more information on when this event will take place, you can check out their website.
5. Shop at some local garage, estate, or yard sales!
Summer is notoriously garage sale season. If you are looking for something fun to do, take a couple dollars or window shop at garage sales in various neighborhoods. You can check on the newspaper for what houses are having garage sales. Estate sales are also fun because you get to go through people's homes! Fun fact: You can sometimes find free sections are garage sales!
6. Take photos in scenic Ypsilanti areas!
Ypsilanti is filled with historic homes, beautiful parks, and beautiful museums. Take your friends and go have a local photo shoot around town. All you need for this activity is your phone and your imagination.
So next time you are bored and broke this summer, try one of these fun activities to fill your day! You will not be disappointed in the beauty and history that this small town has to offer!
