A Playlist For A Pick-Me-Up

I'm a firm believer in the power of music. Music can affect our mood in so many ways. We know this to be true. The songs you listen to when you study are probably very different from what you listen to when you work out. Much of the research done on this shows that our bodies physically react to the rhythm and tone of the songs we listen to. Our heart beats actually sync with the rhythm. Slow songs will slow our heart rate. They might relax us or make us sad. Fast songs will increase our heart rate, which might make us feel excited or energized. Calm songs with some upbeats might make us feel love or happiness. The tone of songs communicate emotions to our brains. Music in a major key is usually more cheerful. Minor key pieces communicate sadness. Music causes our brains to release different chemicals, like dopamine, which is known to be mood-enhancing. And the lyrics of the songs we listen to likely speak to us in some way. We internalize the words and experiences behind these songs even when we're listening while we do other things. In my experience, music has a deep impact on my thoughts and feelings, like listening to sad music when I'm feeling down is likely to bring me to tears. The power of music is that it's something we choose to listen to, many of us enjoy, and it communicates feelings, sometimes without words, that we actually assume from listening. They affect us even after we stop listening.

The last few months have been a whirlwind of emotions for the world and each of us is impacted by that differently. I personally have been on every end of the spectrum of emotions. Things are constantly changing and the Internet overloads us with constant updates. I've been feeling overwhelmed with feelings of sadness and hopelessness and exhaustion because it feels like things are so out of my control. But, I firmly believe in the power of music. Sharing music is definitely part of my love language. And out of love for myself I started making a playlist, tentatively titled "good 4 my mental health." One way I've learned I can cope with these feelings is to exercise more control over how I treat myself. That playlist is meant to be a resource I'm preparing for those days when I'm feeling down and I need a pick-me-up. I've compiled a list of 25 of those songs that I want to share for anyone who needs a pick-me-up in this pandemic.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
