This past week was the "Game of Thrones" season finale and if you are anything like me you are probably still trying to catch your breath. As I watched I couldn’t help but wonder what if the tale of "A Song of Ice and Fire" actually was just that. What if "Game Of Thrones" was a musical, and better yet what if that musical only used hits from the 90s? As I watched the final I couldn’t help relating some of the songs I grew up listening to on the radio to the characters and story.
Just as a fair warning if you are not fully caught up then what are you doing?! You’re wasting time! Go catch up and then come back and read the rest of this. You can do it, trust me it only took me three weeks to watch all seven seasons.
1. Baelish’s Bamboozle
One of the very first songs that popped into my head was "I’m Just a Girl" by No Doubt. This was during the scene in Winterfell where Arya Stark is called into the hall only to be met by several knights, her brother Bran, sister Sansa and that snake Petyr Baelish. The obvious would be to associate this song with Arya because she doesn’t conform to the “standards” of being a proper lady, but I choose this song for Sansa.
In this scene, Sansa for once comes into her own and stands up not only for her rights, but for the Stark household. She proves she is no longer this child who dreams of being a princess in Kings Landing, but rather a protector of the North and a member of house Stark.
Sansa tricks Little Figure into believing that she is about to punish her sister and declare herself Queen of the North, but instead, she ends up ordering Arya to slit his throat. If only Gwen Stefani could have been there to sing him a warning Baelish wouldn’t have ended up lying face down in a pool of his own blood.
2. Queen Slayer?
Dear sweet Jamie Lannister, the King Slayer, and possibly future Queen Slayer. That’s just a small theory I have, but I digress. His love for his twin sister may be coming to an end. Every time Jamie has made an appearance this season it looks like he is literally fighting himself. There is Jamie the noble Knight who is there to protect the people and then there is Jamie who is madly in love with Cersei.
Jamie’s song for the season finale is clearly "If You Could Only See" by Tonic. This song is about a man in love with someone who is manipulative, lies, hurts others and is only out to protect themselves but in the end, does love him back.
The last scene we see of Jamie is him riding away and covering up his golden hand. Maybe he will do some real soul searching and make the right choice. You know like maybe finding himself a nice girl that didn’t share the same womb as he did.
3. Not a Female Dog
Cersei Lannister. What in all of Westeros are we going to do with Cersei Lannister? Meredith Brooks infamous song "B****" is the obvious choice and no, not because we have thought that since season one. After promising a truce to Daenerys to help fight the White Walkers she later admits to her lover/ brother that she has no intentions of helping in the war, but rather to protect her family. Jamie argues with her and in the end, he is sent away.
"Just when you think, you got me figured out / The seasons already changing / I think it’s cool, you do what you do / And don’t try to save me." I really do believe this song was explicitly written for Cersei and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lena Headey doesn’t listen to it to get herself into character.
4. Bran has great timing
For so long GOT has been so anti-incest, but it seems that everyone started singing a different song the second Jon Snow, who still knows nothing, and Daenerys Targaryen, the girl with so many titles it would fill this entire page, met. To be fair they don’t really know that they are related, but at this point in the show with people dying left and right anyone could be blood relatives. I’m looking at you Tyrion Lannister, if that is your real last name.
It wasn’t a shocker that the two most attractive people on the show finally hooked up, it was how it was presented that made the situation a bit cringe worthy. Bran is telling Samwell Tarly the truth of Jon’s paternity while the audience is watching Jon and Dany get it on. This is why I choose the Goo Goo Dolls song "Name."
Jon and Dany are all wrapped up in one another, but neither of them knows Jon’s real name. It’s kind of okay though, they do love one another and it is a custom for the Targaryens’ to keep it in the family.
5. The Wall did what?!
I’m going to go for the obvious here and say that "Wonderwall" by Oasis would have made that final scene that much more impactful. I mean what a missed opportunity by the producers. "Today is gonna be the day / That they’re gonna throw it back to you / By now you should’ve somehow / Realised what you gotta do."
The White Walkers are showing off their brand new weapon, Viserion 2.0, when everyone should have been preparing for their return since the show began. I can just see Tormund and Beric singing a duet as they try to escape down the wall as it collapses from the ice dragon attack.
