So you and I and virtually every person in the world all know that animal testing with makeup just isn't cool. A lot of my favorite brands are unabashedly cruelty-free, such as the new Holy Grail of makeup, Fenty Beauty. But sadly, as of 2018, some of the makeup brands we know and love unfortunately still test their products on animals. Read on to be disappointed.
*Note: The companies listed sell their products in mainland China where they are required to test their products on animals by law.
9. AVON
If you ever closed the door on or purposely hid behind a couch when an Avon saleswoman came to your door, well, it turns you now have a good reason. Not only are they only slightly annoying, but they probably aren't aware that AVON tests on animals despite their claim to have ended this practice 25 years ago.
8. Victoria's Secret
If you know me, you'll know this was coming. I'm throwing shade at Vicky's Secret again, but hear me out: do you have an addiction to their lip collection? Time to cut back and check into rehab, because this multibillion-dollar brand does indeed test these products on animals. The secret's out, Victoria.
7. Covergirl
Easy, breezy, beautiful...not so much with this popular drugstore brand. Despite the numerous celebrity Covergirl ambassadors, this brand sells their products over in mainland China. I don't think even Katy Perry could encourage me to buy another mascara from them again.
6. L'Oreal
L'Oreal Paris actually owns Urban Decay and Nyx, both of which are cruelty-free (and the latter being one of my favorite makeup brands, especially for being strategically placed next to MAC in my hometown mall). Sadly, though, L'Oreal itself still tests their makeup products on animals. I got nothing for this one, just try and avoid it.
5. Make Up For Ever
A popular and higher-end makeup brand sold in Sephora, MUFE has some of the best vinyl eyeliner on the market. Too bad the company is another one to test that very eyeliner on animals. If you're like me and totally adored the Graphic Liner...worry not because that's what Nyx is for!
4. Revlon
I've never really been a big fan of Revlon, so finding out that they aren't actually cruelty-free wasn't as much of a disappointment as you'd expect. I did like their Photoready Foundation a lot, though, especially the one made for my skin color (but it's OK because Fenty Beauty has everybody beat).
3. Almay
Personally, I've always had beef with Almay ever since I bought a "deep" foundation product from them and it turned out to be so NOT deep that it made my skin look like the Ghost of "Dark" Foundation Past. Trust me, you aren't missing out on much by skipping over Almay in your favorite drugstore.
2. Maybelline
Do you know what's tragic? Maybelline's mascaras were always the best, especially the Great Lash mascaras and their eyebrow pencils. Maybe it's Maybelline...but maybe take a pass on this one.
P.S. Need a cruelty-free but affordable alternative? Try this volumizing mascara by Essence!
1. MAC
Probably the worst offender on this list, I was doubly disheartened when I first learned that this wildly popular brand isn't actually cruelty-free like they claim to be. I'm currently still trying to find that perfect dupe to Ruby Woo and Heroine.
