8 Things That You Notice When You Leave California for Kansas

It's So Cold

8 Things That You Notice When You Leave California for Kansas

1. There Is No Traffic in Kansas

I’m sorry, driving 40 mph on the freeway is not “heavy traffic”. Traffic is when you spend more time stopped than you do moving. I’ve been finding amusement watching the morning traffic reports where they talk about “backups” and all I see is open road.

2. Carne Asada Fries Don't Exist

This should just be considered a felony. I called upwards of 30 different Mexican restaurants (I wish I could say I’m exaggerating) and not one had them. Hell most of them didn’t know what I was talking about. What am I supposed to do when I want delicious food that will destroy my body at 1 am?!

3. Students Eat Lunch and Walk to All of Their Classes Indoors.

I mean it makes sense. I wouldn't want to walk outside when it's below 50 degrees either.

4. Humidity is the Devil

Seriously, I don’t understand how anybody can handle weather above 60% humidity. I’ll be sweating all day, bitching about the weather only to find its 81 degrees with 70% humidity! It’s not natural!

5. People Really Love College Basketball in Kansas

I can’t count the amount of times I’ve heard people say they don’t watch the NBA, but love college basketball. I ask someone to name me 1 player from each team and they can’t do it, but they will know every KU player that’s ever played for the last 30 years!

6. No In & Out

This should be number 1. In & Out is God speaking to us through food. Sadly I’m left having fries that are not “animal style”

7. BUGS EVERYWHERE!!!

I swear the sound of cicadas was absolutely deafening my first week here. How does anybody sleep with their constant screeching? Whether is gnats, moths, ticks, or beetles, nowhere is safe. Not even the beautiful patches of grass. That’s right, if you lay in the grass you end up getting bit by chiggers (they really should come up with a new name)

8. Nobody Waters Their Lawn

No, there isn’t a drought in Kansas, they just get so much rain you don’t have to water your lawn. That’s right, no sprinklers walking to school. So much for my “The sprinkler soaked my homework” excuse.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
