8 Reasons You Should Read More

8 Reasons You Should Read More
Casey Lofton

I'm an avid reader and I'm proud of it. It is my main hobby and I read anything from memoirs to thrillers. Reading is my go to at the end of a busy day and my vice whenever I have free time. Books offer a different atmosphere and experience than movies or TV shows do, and I think everyone should give reading for fun a shot. Here's why:

1. It's entertaining

Books are fascinating. There are millions of books to choose from, all different from one another. You could go from a fantasy book with aliens to a thriller with a suspicious piano teacher to a nonfiction book about caterpillars (if that's your thing). Find a book that sounds interesting to you and just start reading.

2. It's cheap

USE THE LIBRARY. It's completely free. Not only that, but it has a huge selection where you are bound to find a story that peaks your interest. Free entertainment... take that Netflix!

3. You learn new things

Every book you read ––nonfiction or fiction–– teaches you new things. Whether it be a random fact or a concept or a historical event, you will take away knowledge from a book whether you realize it or not.

4. It enhances your imagination

No two people imagine the same scene in a book the same way. Even if it is described in lengthy detail, the setting you are picturing or the appearance of the main character will be different for everyone. Not only is there creativity in what you read, but there is also the freedom of anticipating what comes next. The possibilities of how a book will continue or end are endless. Every now and then, a book comes along that crushes all of your theories and does things that you didn't even know were possible (those are the best books, FYI). Before you know it you'll hear a random noise in your closet and immediately think it's Pennywise coming for you.

5. It helps you relate to people

Reading books helps you gain perspective on different issues through different lenses. I'm not saying that every book is accurate in its portrayal, however, memoirs or even own-voices fiction novels are great ways to see into issues that you don't personally experience.

6. It gives you an escape from reality

Sometimes you just really want to get away. Whether it be from a situation, a person, or a responsibility, books will always be there waiting for you.

7. It increases your reading speed

The more you read, the better you get at it. So if you decide to read something you like and do it often, you can increase your reading speed without even realizing it. Then, whenever you have to read a nasty textbook for class you'll be able to read it quickly so you can continue doing other, more pleasing things.

8. You can bond with people over books you both like

Finding out that other people like the same book you do is so beautiful. Sure, it's similar to liking the same movie or TV show or music, but I think it's even better. Reading for fun is becoming less and less popular, so when you find others that read regularly and like the same book(s) you do, you come to appreciate it.

So, I hope you all now have the undying urge to read a book... I know I do.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
