8 Reasons Why You Should Live Off Campus During College

My freshman year of college, I had planned to live on campus and I was dreading it. I had always heard horror stories about living on campus. Before I had committed to living in a dorm, my best friend asked me if I wanted to move in with her. And thank goodness for that because it was one of the most fun years of my life. Now don’t get me wrong, all of your roommates will not be great, living on or off campus. However, I believe that living off campus is the best decision. Reasons that you should live off campus:

  1. Your own bedroom and possibly your own bathroom (depending on the apartment you choose to live in).
  2. People can actually stay the night with you.
  3. You will actually have a kitchen
  4. If you have a boyfriend, or might have a boyfriend sometime soon, sharing a room with someone can get a little awkward.
  5. No hall meetings.
  6. If you live on campus you will possibly be towed at some point.
  7. You can have large groups of friends over (without having to check them in).
  8. Fighting with a roommate is much easier in an apartment (all you have to do is shut your door and you're good).

Having your own bedroom might not seem like a huge deal, but that’s until your roommate is blow-drying her hair at 6 a.m. and you don’t have class until 11. *insert frustrated emoji*

If you have a friend come into town that needs a place to crash she can share your bed for the night if you live off campus, but if you live on campus, you can count that one out.

Sometimes you don’t always feel like eating off your meal plan or eating snacks, but in a dorm there’s not many other options. In an apartment you can have your own kitchen to cook whatever your heart desires.

Sure your roommate won't be there all the time, and your roommate might love your boyfriend, but trying to have a heart to heart with him, or getting into a fight in front of her is bound to be awkward if you're living in a dorm.

This is a pointless unfortunate thing that students living in dorms will have to endure.

When you get back at 2 a.m. from hanging out with some friends you can almost guarantee there won't be any more parking spots open, but when you live in an apartment you never have to worry about parking.

If you want to invite all 7 of your best friends over for a girls night, you can, and they will actually be able to fit comfortable in your apartment!

If you fight with a roommate in an apartment, you can go to your room to get away from them, in a dorm; you are kind of stuck with them.

So here are your 8 reasons why choosing to live off campus is the way to go.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
