If hair types were characterized as humans, curly hair would be the rebellious, punk rock teenager who openly defies their parents. Anyone who has been "blessed" with curly hair can sympathize. We are very aware that many are envious of having naturally curly hair and repeatedly get the same questions. Here are eight things people with curly hair are sick of hearing.
1. "Can I touch it?"
Our hair feels just like your hair, and just like your hair, the more you touch hair, the more it frizzes. So no, you can't touch it.
2. "Is that natural?" or "Is that a perm?"
The difference is not hard to spot.
3. "You look better with straight hair."
Thanks, we totally care about you and your boring ideals of what we would look better with. Now if you'll excuse me, we'll be embracing what makes us unique.
4. "Do you brush it?"
Okay, so every curly-headed person has been through a period of time where they did brush their curls out. However, we have learned better and will never EVER bring a brush close to our curls again...unless the intent is to make a Halloween costume of a child shoving their finger in an electrical socket. Then we'll think about it.
5. Endless celebrity references.
In the few years, I had blonde hair, I was told I looked like Tori Kelly, Taylor Swift, and Peyton from One Tree Hill. Now I get told I look like Jennifer Grey. Do I actually look like those people? Of course not. However, if a celebrity has curly hair, people are game to compare you to them. Sometimes its flattering, other times not so much.
6. Product suggestions from people with straight hair.
They make curly-hair specific hair products for a reason. I mean for starters, we don't even use shampoo. What can your hair do?
7. "Where are you from?"
Having naturally curly hair is so fascinating to some people that they craft strange ideas of where you are from or your race based on your hair alone. No, I don't have any exotic, foreign blood in me. I'm a white girl from Midwestern USA. It can't get any more boring than that.
8. "Is it curly when it's wet?"
Some people seriously think that curly hair is stick straight when its wet and somehow it transforms into this voluminous, ravishing mop of curls when it's dry. Sadly, that is not the truth.
Having curly hair is an elusive trait that unless you have it, you will not know what questions are original and what sayings that you think are original we have actually heard a thousand times. Usually, we don't mind hearing about how much you love our hair though.
