It's back to school season! Which means it's time for a lot of us to meet our new roommates.

Which can be difficult sometimes. Roommates are a different breed of friend, since living together puts you in close proximity. You get to know each other very fast so that you don't run into unknown issues like a food allergy or potential sleepwalking situation. And since I've had my fair share of random roommates, I've compiled a list of effective ways to bond with your new roomies.

Take a Field Trip

You all need to stock up on groceries right? Go together! Target run for cute decorations? Let's all get in the car! Running an errand is a great way to have time to chat, work on the room together and get to know everyone's favorite car jams.

Netflix Movie Night

Speaking of that grocery store trip, have everyone provide their favorite snack food and have a night in with Netflix. Grab a fresh pillow and your favorite PJs, curl up in front of a TV and start the binge. This lets you guys just relax and conversation can just be about the movie or if you're anything like me, it's get sidetracked when something reminds you of a childhood story. Either way, it's just a nice, chill time.

Game Night

Cards, board games, video games, whatever it is, game night is always a good idea. Get your competitive side on and learn which roomie is the most competitive, most strategic, most likely to cheat at Monopoly. Plus if you need extra players, you can invite any S.O's and get to know them too since you'll probably see/hear about them a lot.

Wine

Honestly there's no need to explain this one. Just…..wine.

Room Tours

Finally unpacked and got your new room all set up? Call everyone in for a tour/judging. You can point out your family and old friends you still talk to in the photos I'm assuming you hung up. And it's a great way to see who has the best "hangout" room where you can all gather for various occasions.

Wander Campus

Get to know campus even better by wandering around…but preferably not at night, be smart. Just walking around together and exploring is a great way to just talk. Have everyone pick out their favorite area of campus and pay it a visit. You'll bond, get your steps in and can probably map out where all your classes are.

Talk to Them

Look, I know this might be obvious and probably not what you clicked on this article for, but talk to them. Don't close your door all the time. Seek out your roommates for a five minute "hey how was your day" and they'll probably start doing the same. One of the great things about roommates is knowing all the little things about their life, not just the big stuff. But the only way to learn if they have a test coming up you could ask them about….is to ask.

So with that, I wish all of you a happy back to school and good luck with your new roommates…..they're very lucky to have you.

When I was a child, I used to look forward to Memorial Day Weekend from the time I returned to school after Christmas vacation. It was the yearly benchmark announcing the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. It meant I was one step closer to regattas, swim meets and tennis matches.

I remember how exciting summer was when I was a kid. I would just be eagerly waiting for school to end so that I could fly to some exotic location with my family for the summer. Or hang out with my friends every day. Or just lay around in bed or read, paint, draw, basically do whatever.
