7 Ways To Beat The Winter Term Blues

As midterms start to rear their ugly heads, trying to find inspiration in the cloudy and grey days can seem hard. As you cram for that first exam or work on your first project, take a second to brighten your day and fight the winter term blues.

1. Enjoy a hot beverage on a gloomy winter day.

This one seems obvious, but whether it's hot cocoa, peppermint tea, or even a Hot Toddy, cozying up with a blanket and wrapping your cold hands around a hot cup of your favorite beverage can make even the gloomiest day seem a little brighter.

How to make a Hot Toddy:

1 oz Bourbon

2 tsp lemon juice

1 tbsp honey

1/4 c. boiling water

2. Buy a new statement winter weather piece

The greys of winter can take a toll on your wardrobe, often resulting in drab and sweaty raincoats and an unyielding stream of yoga pants and oversize sweatshirts. Take the opportunity to add a rich winter colored sweater or scarf to your wardrobe; think in hues of marsala, plum, emerald, and cranberry.

3. Go on a drizzly day hike

In the rainy Oregon and Washington winters, taking to the muddy mountains and hills seems like the wrong option on a Saturday morning. But in our little corner of the US, some of the pretties hikes are more enjoyable with a little drizzle on your skin, and the fresh air will rejuvenate your frozen winter bones.

4. Be inspired by seasonal flavors

Once the holidays are over, it seems as if the chilly winter months leave much to be desired, as far as food is concerned; this isn't the case. Seasonal cooking offers a lot of options for varied dishes, and in the waning twilight nights of February, look for root vegetables like beets and radishes, winter squash like butternut and sweet potatoes, and greens like fennel, kale, and broccoli.

5. Feng-shui your home for the winter season

There is no evidence that feng-shui will have any kind of effect on your "chi," but as the cold winter days drag on and you remain holed up in your home, giving your place a face lift can help relieve the stale air that winter brings. Whether you add a throw blanket or a new lamp, or simply move the major items around, giving your room or home a new energy can help revitalize your soul as you head into spring.

6. Explore dark beers while the weather permits

In the hot and sunny days of summer, pale ales and British blondes have a home in the tanned hands of beer connoisseurs. The Deschutes Twilight Summer Ale and the Calapooia Water Street Wheat are two of the best for mid-summer afternoon day fades. In the wet winter days, thicker bodied beers like stouts and porters find compliments in the brisk weather. Look to try the Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout or the Deschutes Black Butte Porter.

7. Take advantage of sunny days

No matter the state you live in, sunny days are few and far between from November to March; especially in the Pacific Northwest, rain dominates the sky for weeks without end. When they do come around, take some time to enjoy them. Whether you enjoy a beer outside between classes, studying on the library quad, or simply take a walk through your town, getting a little natural Vitamin D can help cure a bad case of seasonal affective disorder.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
