I’ve called Illinois, more specifically the northwest suburbs of Chicago my home for the last 24 years.
While I could rattle off a list of the downsides to living in a state that has two seasons (winter and construction), I have instead compiled a list of 7 things that make living in the suburbs of the Land of Lincoln worthwhile.
1. The City of Chicago
Whether it’s enjoying a nice walk on the lake front or spending a night on the town in Logan Square, there is always something to do. Plus, it’s only an hour from most suburbs, making it not too long of a drive or train ride!
2. Proximity to Wisconsin
Wisconsin, the beloved cheese state, is as little as an hour away from some spots in the northwest suburbs. Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to be this close to cheese?
3. Six Flags Great America
Maybe I’m biased since I worked there, but spending a day at this amusement park is usually one exciting time.
4. The Second City
So many comedic legends have walked the halls of the infamous Second City. How can one not be proud to say Tina Fey learned some of her comedic chops in the Windy City?
5. Portillos
A hotdog with the works, meaning no ketchup! Don’t get me started on the drool-inducing chocolate cake.
6. “Downtown” portions of suburban cities
Downtown Palatine is there for the nightlife while Downtown Libertyville has enough cute mom and pop restaurants to fill you up for a full days meal.
7. Woodfield Mall
While it might be a pain to navigate thru on the weekend, there are enough stores to please any suburbanite.
The next time someone says the suburbs are blah and all the same, maybe share a slice of chocolate cake and plan a day trip to the city since it's so close.
