As far as good roommates go, I have a pretty decent one this year. He is really quiet and loves to sleep. His temperament is amiable enough and we usually enjoy nightly walks around campus together. We don't have the most in-depth conversations throughout the day (they are typically one-sided) but his enthusiasm makes up for it. He never pitches in to help buy food, but he doesn't eat much so I haven't brought it up with him...yet. For the most part we tend to get along pretty well.
It doesn't hurt that he's my dog.
If you share a living space with your pup, then you probably know how different it is versus living with another person. My Chihuahua/Terrier mix, JoJo, makes me laugh and hangs with me through the brutal times. He is my best little buddy and it doesn't get much better than that. Here are a few ways that having a dog roommate changes up your living situation (for the better!).
1. You will never have to pick up the food you drop on the ground again.
You are literally living with a canine vacuum cleaner. Chips and salsa night is the best because there is virtually no clean up. A dropped tortilla chip is never wasted and the world is a better place because of it. You may deal with some impatient begging and creepy side-eye when you don't share, but that just comes with the territory.
2. They always let you pick the next show to watch on Netflix.
I mean, there are plenty of times Jo probably preferred something other than The Office, but I never heard him complain once and so my conscious is guilt-free.
3. Your dog truly believes that you can do no wrong.
So what if your hair is a little on the gross side and you have to retake Chem? Your dog thinks you're a rockstar every day of the week.
4. They help you with your fitness.
I be up in the gym, just workin' on my fitness. He's my witness.
I know if my dog doesn't have an outlet to release energy, he's a tiny terror. A nightly walk keeps him from tearing up my couch pillows and also motivates me to stay active.
5. They are always down to nap.
Jo and I are really big nappers. Even if we've been cooped up writing papers and haven't seen sunshine in a week, he is always ready to sleep when I am. A warm little ball of fur curled up beside you makes for a pretty great nap buddy.
6. Dog selfies are the best selfies.
JoJo is the star of virtually all of my Snapchats. He is the cutest dog in the entire world and that is an actual fact. If you haven't seen a picture of my dog, that actually concerns me because I have one right here and you need to look at it.
7. Spoiling them is the most fun you will ever have.
We really do not deserve dogs.
They are loving, kind and always ready to pick you up when you're down. And they don't ask for anything in return. Some mashed chicken can actually make their entire day. Spoil your little roommate because he will be really grateful and he also deserves the world for putting up with you.
