7 Best/Worst Things About Living in a Dorm

In This Article:

Nothing will compare to the memories I have made first semester in the dorm.

You (hopefully) find a friend for life.

Although I was best friends with my roommate before living with her, I know now for sure that we will always be best friends. We have found a way to live in a tiny compartment without fighting and we are always there for each other, no matter the situation.

It is a pain to keep clean

You would think because it is such a small room that the cleaning would be easy, but that is so wrong. The constant in and out creates layers of dust and dirt on literally everything. Also, the shared air vents go for shared germs. I eventually went to air purifiers and new air vents. The idea of having a room that a complete stranger had before is also a little gross, but we made sure to bleach everything on move-in day.

You meet your best friends on your hall

You come back to the dorm after a bad day, at least 50 girls are on the hall to cheer you up. You need to study, head to the library! I have met so many people from just walking in and out, which resulted in so many conversations that turn into friendships. From advice to coffee creamer to a funky pair of earrings, everything you need is next door or across the hall.

Those nice, comfy beds (major sarcasm)

Ok, so the beds aren't that bad, but that is only if you put mattresses pads (a lot of them). Since I do not get much sleep-in college, my bed always feels so nice until I wake up in the morning. The cricks in my neck make it that much harder to get up for those morning classes. Even the most comfortable bed on campus will never be able to compare to that big bed waiting for you at home.

Those first college memories

Nothing will compare to the memories I have made first semester in the dorm. From coming in after rush week to discuss our experiences that day, to going out to the frats for the first time. Being able to go back to a dorm that is full of people that share these memories with you is so much fun because it creates a bond and such a great friendship.

LOUD

While I am never one to get bothered by people screaming or slamming doors at night, a few people seem to get a little irritated. The walls are extremely thin, so every louder conversations and door opened is definitely heard. Every step taken above you is maximized, which usually results in angry downstairs neighbors. I personally aggravate my downstairs neighbors a lot from just walking in at night. Although this can be annoying, always pick the top floor and you be living a luxury!

You are right in the middle of everything

It is so easy to get anywhere on campus from the dorms. I can walk to class, the union to eat, the sorority house, and the frat houses at night. I am able to get just about anywhere, which also means I save money for gas. Walking with your friends also creates that much more memories, especially walking back from the fraternity houses at night. Another benefit to the accessibility is you get your daily dose of exercise in. Nothing is better than saving money and staying skinny!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
