Soundcloud rapper Daniel Hernandez, aka “6ix9ine” or “Tekashi69," has recently released his first full length mixtape “Day 69.” This mixtape followed a series of singles released by the artist, such as “GUMMO,” “KOODA,” and, “KEKE.” Born in Brooklyn, Tekashi69 started his rap career hyper aggressively and used an angry, full throat approach to this genre.
The track “BILLY” started this mixtape and is supposedly one of the best songs on it. The funniest part of this song is during the introduction while 6ix9ine screamed the lyrics, “Talk your s***, let your nuts drag, n***.” and, “Follow protocol, Blood, get in they f***’n chest, n***.” While screaming these lyrics, Tekashi’s voice cracked and it sounds similar to him angrily sobbing. This takes away any seriousness, or threating nature that he wanted to establish and instead makes him sound like a child.
The second track “GUMMO” is the most famous song on this mixtape, and Tekashi loved it so much that he also made it track ten. Even though the track ten version features the rapper Offset, I definitely prefer it to track two. Lyrics in this song include, “Pop these n****s like a wheelie n****, you a silly n****”, “N***** iffy, uh, Blicky got the stiffy, uh”, and, “Put my d*** in her backbone, I pass her to my bro” show the true depth to his lyrical genius.
The best song on this mixtape is track four “KEKE” which features rappers Fetty Wap, and A Boogie wit da Hoodie. This song incorporates an awesome synth-y backbeat, and Tekashi’s is barely present at all. The chorus to this song is also super catchy.
Most Soundcloud rappers are in a race to make the biggest fool out of themselves in order to attract fans, and Tekashi69 succeeds in doing this. Acts like tattooing the number 69 all over himself, dying his hair various rainbow colors, and pleading guilty to a felony count of “Use of a child in a sexual performance” show how far he will go in order to attract attention to himself.
Additionally, the blueprint of the artwork used for “Day 69” can be found on a young artist’s Tumblr page. Apparently “cryptidsp00n” created a similar image, and the artist that “created” the album artwork used this foundation without permission. The artist has addressed this issue, and the link to the response is at the bottom of this article.
Overall, “Day 69” has a lot of potential due to great musical backbeats, but falls flat on its face because of Tekashi’s one toned anger-rap. Sounds of gun shots, the phrase “Scum Gang!,” and Tekashi referencing himself, are far too present in this mixtape and it received a strong 2 out of 10. By God I hope this is not released on vinyl.
