6 Things I Wish I Learned In School

How do I become an adult?

As a college student and employee, I've learned so much I wish I learned sooner in life. In middle school and high school, I learned more about mixing chemicals and memorizing formulas than I did about how to be a grown up. There are tons of great lessons that being in school taught me, but there are still lots of questions. I put together a list of 6 very important things I wasn't taught in class at school that I wish I learned then versus now.

1. How To Write Checks

Although they are pretty straight forward, most people don't know how to write a check when they first see one. In the real world, people receive pay checks or write checks when paying/donating. Imagine handing a 15-year-old a check, most of them probably would not know what to do with it, am I right? Definitely, should've learned that in school.

2. Job Applications/Resume

I was never taught how to look for available jobs around me or how to fill out an application. Again, applications are personal and usually pretty straightforward, but students in high school should be taught this as it's a basic necessity in life. A resume is necessary for job applications and interviews, so why were we never taught the proper form and concept of it? It's easy to find examples online and use those to help create one, but isn't it important enough to learn this in school?

3. Credit Card

Of course, we all know what a credit card is. It's that magical little plastic card that you can just swipe and buy anything with! The real questions are, how do you get one? Where do you get one? How do you set it up? What does it mean to build credit? What's a credit score?

4. Taxes

What are taxes? Why do we pay them? How do we pay them? They get taken out of our payroll at work, but for what reason? How much do we pay? All these are valid questions that should have been answered a long time ago.

5. Insurance

What's insurance? There are lots of various types of insurance, but what does that do?Why is it necessary? If we learned this in school, I assure you, people would grow up to be more knowledgeable.

6. Loans

What's a loan? How do you take out loans? What's the need for them? What are student loans? Again, more questions that could've and should've been answered earlier in life.

We go to school to learn. We go to school to be educated. What's the point when you don't learn all these basic concepts? We learn calculus, but do we use that in our daily lives? Some may, but not all do. Taxes, insurance, loans, job applications, all of the above are part of our daily lives as an adult. It's important to be taught quality over quantity.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
