We all wait in anticipation until it is socially acceptable to sing and dance to Christmas tunes. For some people, Christmas music cannot begin until December; for others, like myself, Christmas music begins whenever we get the Christmas bug (I got it in August this year).
Whenever you are ready for Christmas music, though, you understand the struggle of finding the right music to fit your mood. Don't you worry: I have been sampling and listening to different artists for three months now, and I have picked out the prime Christmas albums for every occasion this holiday season.
1. Studying for Finals
Whether you're busy memorizing the bones of the Appendicular Skeleton or the lines for your final scene in Acting, check out Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas.Twelve out of the fourteen songs are wordless, so don't worry about getting distracted by the singing when you need to focus. If you need a dance break, though, be sure to listen for the classic "Linus and Lucy", and jive those feet.
2. Cleaning the House for a Christmas Party
Cleaning does not have to be boring. Pop in The Jackson Five's Christmas Album, and you may want to keep on cleaning (just kidding, no one ever wants an excuse to keep cleaning). Little Michael Jackson sings his heart out in "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause", and we cannot help but think back to the days when we were positive Santa was real. Nowadays, I'm only about ninety percent sure.
3. Cooking for the Christmas Party
Keep on jamming to The Jackson Five, or go for more '40s vibes with the album Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas by the iconic Ella Fitzgerald. Ella's croon transports us all to a New York City Christmas setting, and I cannot get enough of it. Her voice is the perfect backdrop for a Christmas party; you may even recognize her take of the song "Sleigh Ride" from the 2003 movie Elf!
4. Jamming in the Car
This is my favorite part of Christmas music: when we can sing as loudly and as obnoxiously as we want in the car to Merry Christmas, arguably Mariah Carey's best album. It is hard to escape a Christmas season without hearing "All I Want for Christmas Is You". Please stop listening to the mediocre-at-best versions since the 1994 album release; just listen to the original version because there is nothing funny about that G5 she hits.
5. Preparing For Christmas Day
It is important to find an album that really communicates the meaning of Christmas. For me, that is the newest Hillsong Album The Peace Project, which was released at the end of October. Although most of the songs are familiar Christmas carols, there is one new song in particular that brings me to a heart of worship for this season. "Prince of Peace" aptly communicates the message of Christmas in about six minutes. It's one of those songs that makes you want to cry and shout in celebration at the same time - that's what I did in my dorm room, anyway.
People. We have less than a month until the big day. Make sure you're cramming these wonderful tunes into your work days, your study days, and your dancing days. Most importantly, remember why we celebrate this season, and turn your excitement heavenwards. Make this a memorable December!
