After the significant number of New Year’s Days I have gone through my life, I have come to the realization that resolutions for the new year don’t always pan out.
I either set expectations much too high or try to accomplish things I would never have intended if it wasn’t for the new year. Plus, using New Year’s Day as the reason to make considerable alterations in my lifestyle doesn’t seem like a genuine point of change.
So instead of how to make New Year’s resolutions, here are some ideas of what I’m going to try to accomplish my goals year-round.
1. Have reasonable goals
So, barring a few individuals, you’re probably not heading to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics after heading to your local gym for the first time since you broke your last New Year’s resolution (January 2, 2017).
That’s ok. Aiming to complete a 5k in two months is just as significant of a goal, but you are much more likely to see it come to fruition.
2. Work your way up slowly
Starting with something easy to integrate into your very busy life would be the best start. Maybe start by walking to class instead of taking the bus (or an Uber/Lyft). Then, work your way up to running in the mornings before class.
3. Partner up
Be they your roommate(s), siblings, parents, local gym buddies or dogs — find someone with similar goals, ambitions, and most importantly desire for self-improvement. Together, you’ll conquer the world and even have a great time bonding!
4. Enjoy the experience
Have a good time! If you’re struggling and slogging through something you both hate and don’t find yourself getting ahead with, let it go.
Find something you actually enjoy doing instead. You’ll thank yourself for it and then actually accomplish the goal.
5. Be nice to yourself
Most importantly, remember who you’re doing all this for in the first place. You!
So make sure that when you declare your next resolution you will do the best you can. Seeing yourself grow and learn and have fun is the best form of self-love. And you deserve it.
