Living with other people can be challenging at times, so here are five tips to help you along the way.
1. Be Considerate
Be mindful and aware that you are not the only person living in your dorm or apartment, so what you do may negatively impact your roommate(s). For instance, don't play music unnecessarily loudly, especially during the week. It's rude and inconsiderate to the other people you live with.
2. Respect Your Everyone's Belongings
In other words, don't take your roommate's personal items or eat their food without their permission. In the event that you do eat their food without asking, either kindly replace it or pay them back.
3. Throw Your Trash Away
Being a college student can be very time consuming, but throwing away your garbage or leftover food should not be part of that equation. Taking a few minutes out of your day to dispose of your trash will not disrupt your schedule in the least.
4. Clean Your Own Dishes
Living in an apartment with a communal kitchen has its perks, but everyone is still responsible for their own messes and mishaps. While you may not have the time to take care of your dirty dishes right away, try not to leave it in the sink for an extended period of time. 24 hours is usually a good rule of thumb.
5. Communicate
Voice your concerns to your roommate(s). If your roommate is doing anything that is making you uncomfortable or frustrated, let them know. It's better to address a problem early on rather than letting it fester and grow.
