I have to admit: I'm a huge sucker for vintage movies (i.e. movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood.) The actors seem more charismatic and convincing, the stories are more encapsulating, and of course, the costumes are more glamorous. No matter which movie I watch, I can't help but inspect the clothing. Here are 5 of my favorite aesthetically pleasing vintage movies.
1. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"
Hate the title, love the wardrobe. I can't get enough of Dorothy Shaw's style (pictured on the right); I honestly hope that someday I'll be able to own clothing with even half as much class. And don't even get me started on the big dance number at the end. Talk about a show-stopping dress!
2. "How To Marry A Millionaire"
Two Marilyn Monroe movies in a row? Of course. She has unparalleled style no doubt, but the true star was Schatze Page, played by Lauren Bacall. Everything she wore in that movie was stunning in its own way, and stood out with a certain sophistication that the other girls lacked. (I could do without the shoes, though.)
3. "Gone With The Wind"
Even though Scarlett O'Hara infuriates me beyond belief, I had to include this classic. Every single character had clothing that matched who they were and their scenario perfectly. Hats off to the stylist.
4. "Sabrina"
One of my favorite films by one of my favorite fashion icons, Audrey Hepburn is a vision in this movie. The costumes stand out to me not only because of how iconic they are, but also because of their simplicity. Need I say more?
5. "My Fair Lady"
Yes, another Audrey Hepburn movie. This one is almost the polar opposite of "Sabrina," though. The gowns are utterly resplendent and fit for a princess (hint hint wink wink.) I can only dream of wearing dresses like that...
