5 Things To Know Before You Go Vegan

So you are thinking about becoming vegan. That’s cool, but you should know some things first.

1. You need to know WHY you are vegan.

The first question I always get asked when I tell anyone that I am vegan is “why?” You would think that this question shouldn’t have to be answered but many people don’t even know exactly what being vegan means. So instead of getting instantly defensive and pleading your case, give them a thoughtful response. The obvious answer is that you have chosen that you don’t want to harm or use animals in any way by consuming them or products that are sourced from them. However everyone has their own version of this definition so take some time to think about what being vegan means to you.

2. Being vegan is MORE than just not eating animals.

Something you may not think about is your current shampoo, cleaning products, eye shadow palettes could all potentially contain animal by-products. Not to mention animal testing is widely used, which is a whole other issue. Take time to consider what animal rights you value and then research your must-have beauty products.

3. A vegan diet doesn’t make you skinny

Vegan diets are often glamorized by celebrities or your favorite YouTuber, but eating vegan doesn’t necessarily make you an Instagram model. Several pastas, breads, and even treats like Oreos are all vegan and if you are anything like me you will want to take advantage of Ben & Jerry’s dairy free ice cream. So if you think that simply eating vegan is a good way to diet, it will take a little more work than that.

4. If you have a food allergy, being vegan will be harder for you.

Many processed substitutes for meat and dairy are made with soy and various types of tree nuts, especially coconuts. However, don’t let this discourage your vegan journey! You would just need to do a little more research than the average vegan.

5. Going out to eat won’t be as easy

Unless you live in big cities like L.A., it’s a bit harder to find restaurants that support vegan diets, ESPECIALLY fast food. Some times a girl needs a little more than just French fries and it's easy to feel like an inconvenience when you have super complicated orders. However don't let it get you down! There is some pretty incredible food that you don't have to give up. If you are someone who is always on the go, Taco Bell will become your best friend.

Being vegan doesn’t have to be hard! It just takes a little more mindfulness about what you eat and products you use.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
