5 Things Musicians Are SICK of Hearing

Music is more than just a hobby to me, it's my life.

I have spent my whole life surrounded by music and I have always wanted to make a career out of it. As I have started to pursue this, I have found that people are very skeptical of my choice to make music my career. Here are just a few of the questions that musicians hear on an all too regular basis.

1. "Oh, like Pitch Perfect?"

Really, any of the singing, dancing, musical movies would work in this question but here is what I have to say to that (or at least what I think when I hear this).

No. NoNOOOONOnonono. I am not the stereotype that the media has created for me, please educate yourself and then we can talk.

2. "What do you do?"

So it usually goes a little something like this...

Person: So what do you do?

Me: I'm a singer

Person: No, I mean like what do you dooooo?

Me: *rolls eyes and sighs* I work at Bath and Body Works as a Sales Associate, it's a lot of fun. Moderately priced soaps are my calling.

Person: *laughs*

(props to you if you got my reference, we can be friends)

3. "Oh my gosh, you're a singer?! Can you sing for me?"

If you have ever asked me this question, chances are we are probably not good friends.

No, I will not just stop right here and bust out into song. This question just proves that #1 is such a big problem.

4. "Can I give you some advice..."

If you have to ask, the answer is probably no. Unless you are my voice teacher or somebody whom I have asked for advice in the past, I have to respectfully decline this wonderful advice. I know you think you are being helpful but I promise you I probably already know everything you are going to say, this is kinda my thing.

5. "So what is your plan if this doesn't work out?"

This question, while I know there are good intentions behind it, is very offensive. What do you mean 'if this doesn't work out'? I don't think like that, no one likes to think like that.

But when they ask, my response is simple, "try again."

I say this because there have been and will be many times in my career as a musician when things won't work out. This is part of the job. What people don't understand is: music is more than just a hobby to me, it's my life. If my parents taught me anything, it's that whole saying that parents always say...

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
