5 Things I Learned In 2016

A few of my takeaways from the dramatically controversial year

1. Do not underestimate the power of orange people

I was never one to truly take anyone with an absurdly unnatural shade of tangerine too seriously, but I also never expected them to reach serious positions of power. With Donald Trump’s unfortunate victory, I learned to always take into consideration the capabilities of a discolored human.

2. Wine is not always your best friend

Contrary to my prior belief that the God-given gift of wine never fails you in times of need- whether as a bedtime sedative or an assistive tool on the path to intoxication- apparently it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. After one night that blessed me only with a catastrophic hangover, causing me to bolt to the bathroom in the midst of a riveting discussion in my Shakespeare class, I will spend 2017 doing some reevaluation on how many glasses of sauvignon blanc is truly appropriate.

3. Avocados never go out of style

I have been a fan of the green fruit since introduced to it in the form of avocado toast several years ago, but as it became more of a fad food than anything else, I occasionally questioned its longevity in my diet. However, as I sit here now enjoying a bowl of guacamole, if I got one takeaway from the year 2016, it is to recognize the staying power of the avocado.

4. Chokers are amazing

I used to look back at my days sporting the classic black throat-squeezing necklaces in a cringe-worthy way, and I even momentarily questioned its recent comeback. However, now you will rarely see me out at night without one. Mostly, I enjoy its ability to give some uniqueness and statement to my outfit when I decide to wear all black, which happens 97% of the time.

5. There is always more drama with Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna

I was happy for the birth of Dream, but also slightly concerned because I assumed the drama would at least come to a temporarily slight halt for the wellbeing of their child. However, it appears I did not have a thing to worry about! I was certainly notdisappointed when I saw the couple’s Instagram battle involving the taking of a baby- but more importantly, Eggo waffles and BBQ sauce. I cannot wait to see what 2017 will bring!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
