Coffee is more than just a drink. It's a social norm and a cultural phenomenon. Want to go on a casual date? Let's grab coffee. College interview? Let's meet over a cold brew. Finals coming up? Let's study together at our favorite coffee shop. Tired? The answer is coffee.
But personally, my body isn't equipped for more than a sip of my friend's latte, and it's got me thinking. What is so great about coffee anyway? Sure, it tastes good (arguably), but what is really so great about artificially waking yourself up? There are healthier options: sleeping, working out, matcha or chai tea, sugar...
I've been on the anti-coffee train for a couple of years now — which is difficult when you love the taste of coffee, your friends do homework in local coffee shops, and your next class project is coffee themed. Clearly, coffee can be very enticing, but so can many other self-destructive substances. The purpose of this is to open your eyes as to what is going on inside of you when you put coffee in your system. My scientific back up is led by Dr. Mark Hyman on this one.
1. It increases stress and anxiety.
I'm not just saying this because I get the shakes from a frilly Starbucks drink and proceed to have a meltdown. The caffeine that is in coffee increases your stress hormones (catecholamines). Science y'all.
2. You lose important minerals.
Have you ever noticed that drinking coffee makes you have to pee all the freaking time? You're excreting calcium, magnesium and potassium.
3. It's addictive.
I don't even need science to back me up on this one. Asking the average coffee drinker how they feel when they miss their scheduled coffee. They're going through withdrawal. It's very easy to become dependent on coffee, and even harder to kick because why would you want to disassociate with a substance that's making your more productive. When it's difficult to see immediate drawbacks, it is more of a struggle to wean yourself off.
4. It can cause insomnia.
Personally, if I drink coffee at 2 pm, I'm definitely not sleeping for another twelve hours. Most likely none of you are as coffee sensitive as I am, but the bottom line is that caffeine keeps you up... sometimes longer than you originally intended.
5. Indigestion.
While the temperature of your drink may burn your tongue, the acidity in your cup of coffee is burning your insides.
