A close friend of mine introduced me to this eye-opening film around 6 months ago. Since then, I have watched this film over 5 times and yet I can’t wait to view it again. Here five of the many reasons as to why you should watch 'My Name Is Khan'.
1. It is such an emotionally gripping tale
This movie will have you laughing, crying, pounding your fists with anger, and whimpering in pain. You may even experience emotions that you never thought you were capable of feeling. (P.S. It’s OK to cry, I cried too)
2. It's so relevant
Even though this film was released in 2010, the themes and motifs touched upon are still extremely relevant as of today. This story not only reflects the struggles of millions of lives after the terrorist attack on the twin towers but also the hardships many individuals continue to face today. War. Loss. Hate. Prejudice. Discrimination and the struggle to overcome religious differences and hatred. In the film, we feel the grievances of the characters as if they were our own. We get a glimpse of what people do during loss, and how you can either chose the path of hatred or forgiveness.
3. We learn that love has no boundaries
Rizwan and Mandira's love story shows us that love has no boundaries. Love can overcome our differences in thought, likes, and even religion, something many people strongly identify as part of their identity. Aside from romantic love, friendship and familial love is a never-ending theme. With true love and genuine companionship, there is no hurdle you can’t conquer. If you’re a hopeless romantic like me, you can bet the main couple reaffirms that true love and happiness is still attainable.
4. The main character is a wonderful role model
Although Rizwan Khan suffers from Asperger's syndrome since birth, nothing holds him back from being a self-sufficient and successful individual. We witness his love for those he cares about and his fighting spirit. Despite being trapped in a crisis of his own as the story progresses, Rizwan takes an active role and makes an effort to physically be there to help the victims of a recent natural disaster.
5. Because why not?
So go on now. Take a chance and watch this film because why not? Trust me, it'll definitely be 2 hours and 45 minutes well spent. Besides, who would want to miss out on a movie featuring the iconic Bollywood cinematic couple: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol Mukherjee Devgan?
